  • My Life With Rati Kaka

    My Life With Rati Kaka

Shri Ratilal Premchand Chandaria is many things to many people. For me, he was my father figure. For our family, GujaratiLexicon Team and crores of GujaratiLexicon user, he was just our loved ‘Rati Kaka’.

I still remember that rainy day in July 2005. One fine day we got a phone call that certain Mr Chandaria wants to meet us. Not knowing anything, we said OK. That was a strange meeting for me and my team. Ratibhai could not hear us, Sachin was helping him. But he was very interested in knowing about us and the work we have done on Gujarati. He asked us many questions, some not so comfortable. That day he told very little about himself. He asked me to research about his passionate project. I said OK. He left. I was very surprised and curious.

After he had gone, when I explored his project, I was wonderfully surprised. I was amazed to see the phenomenal work done by him. He had achieved something impossible – something which Universities or large companies or Government should be doing. And he achieved this solely on the basis of his devotion, efforts and enterprise at the age of 83. He had given 20 years of devotion and dedicated service to this project. 20 years is a long time – our experience of a little more than 20 months on Gujarati language had been very frustrating and thankless. Also, he was spending time on a collective good, rather than pursuing his business. Had he spent the same time and effort and passion on his business, he would have added more jewels to his business treasure. But he choose to work for his mother tongue.

He has chased people in USA, UK, Canada, Germany, France, India etc. He has approached companies like Microsoft, Apple, CMC, etc. He fulfilled his passion for Gujarati typing and has worked on all technologies, equipments and issues to fulfill his burning desire to benefit Gujaratis and non-Gujaratis to learn Gujarati with pride. In fact, inspite of his weak health, he had come down traveling for 2 hours on Mumbai roads to meet us. He had postponed his trip to London once he came to know about us.

Our interactions increased and we started working together. It culminated into the release of GujaratiLexicon on Jan 13, 2006. The GujaratiLexicon Project became famous and its users increased. The project became a common passion. The GL Trustee Team of Rati Kaka, Uttam Gajjar, Balvant Patel, Mansukh Shah and Vipool Kalyani worked very closely. We got support and encouragement from Dhirubahen Patel. We added more features to Gujaratilexicon and it continued to touch lives of people across the world. Digital Bhagwadogmandal, Digital Sarth Kosh, Lok Kosh, Kids Corner, Crossword, Mobile Apps etc are the worthy additions to the mighty project. The digital version of BhagwadGomandal reached the young generation and surpassed the print circulation of decades in a few months. It is archived in the US Congress Library and British Library Catalogue as a landmark work of Gujarati – an achievement made possible under his leadership.

In those years, I came across the extraordinary individual that Ratibhai is. He is a person with tremendous zeal and energy. He is a person who is razor sharp in his thinking, intellect and memory. He is very kind and caring. He cannot accept NO for an answer. I am yet to come across a person more humble than Ratibhai. He never speaks about his contribution, efforts, past laurels etc. He only wants to leave something for the future generation. We youth can learn the important lessons of dedicated service, relentless pursuit of goal, endless energy from him. His loving and caring nature adds another dimension to his greatness.

I was privileged to spend very close time with him. Whenever he would return to India, I would get a call from his team asking me to meet him immediately. Whenever I would go to his Mumbai home, he would ensure that I had my favorite vegetables (I am a fussy eater) and there was a PAN for me to eat. We shared our love for PAN and Pani Puri. When he was outside of India, Skype would ensure that we remained in touch. When I went to London, he would prepare tea for both of us in the morning. When I went out of his home in London, he taught me to navigate London’s metro. He would wait for me to return home. He would sit late till night and talk. And his talks would be about gujarati language, technology and helping people. He never talked about himself !

He was always there for me – my marriage, birth of Aditya and other milestones of life. When my wife was pregnant, he wrote emails to her and after her pregnancy, he was the first one to visit her – even ahead of my other family members. Whenever I had to make any decision or whenever I was low – one Skype call to him and I would be clearer. He was my life mentor. He stayed at my house in Ahmedabad and time would fly. And so would Kulfis and Pans. He was a foodie and would love exploring good food.

    Rati Kaka @ AshKom Wedding

God has made him for a special purpose – he was indeed a divine soul. He was a melting pot of golden heart overflowing with lots of love, tons of generosity and unbelievable kindness. He worked his entire life with the agility of a roaring tiger and lived his life with his principles. He has led his life by example and built a successful and sustainable business. And then contributed to larger goals. No wonder, his contemporaries and his friends find inspiration from his life.

GL team is indeed honored to make a small contribution to this great work. We pray that the project should reach maximum Gujaratis across the world, create more linguists and contemporarize Gujarati for the future. Rati Kaka lives on in our hearts and GujaratiLexicon.

Rati Kaka – Suddenly life looks strange without you. I will always miss you!

Rati Kaka – A Divine Journey!

On Dussehra, October 13th 2013, Shri Ratilal Premchand Chandaria commenced his final journey exactly 91 years after he entered this world. Ratilal, known affectionately as Ratikaka or RP, has been an inspirational figure. He was a renowned visionary leader, industrialist and philanthropist. In his later years, driven by his passion for his mother tongue, Gujarati, he founded and was the force behind GujaratiLexicon, Digital Bhagwadgomandal and several other digital Gujarati Language initiatives.

Ratikaka was born to Premchand and Punji Chandaria on Dussehra. He undertook his primary and secondary education in Nairobi and Mombasa, Kenya. As an active Scout, he was associated with youth activities, sports & yoga. He was also a member of Nairobi’s Jain Youth League in its early days. At the beginning of the Second World War, he migrated to India along with his parents. In 1943 he married Vijayalaxmi, daughter of Fulchand and Devi Shah, in Jamnagar. Today he is survived by his 4 children and 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Instead of continuing his education, he joined the family business and ventured into marine and land transportation before quickly establishing an Import and Export business. This included working with organizations such as Mahatma Gandhi Awards, Indian Gymkhana, Jain Centre, Jain Fellowship Centre. Ratikaka always believed in using his time, energy, and talent for causes with a sensitivity to the community.

Ratikaka dedicated the last 25 years of his life in realizing his vision of using technology to continue the living tradition of the Gujarati language. His relentless passion and missionary zeal for language inspired many across the globe at various organizations. The launch of GujaratiLexicon on Jan 13, 2006 resulted in a mega language portal which has grown into the largest online portal for the Gujarati language with over 25 million visitors. This resource has revived an interest in the language and led to many further initiatives including Digital Sarth Kosh, Saras Spellchecker, Lok-Kosh, Crossword, Quiz, GL Gems, Kids Games and GL Mobile Apps and a digitized online version of Gujarat’s Encyclopedia, Bhagwadgomandal. This encyclopedia is archived in the US Congress Library and British Library Catalogue as a landmark Gujarati work. This has involved working with key partners including CDAC, GV, GSP and other organisations.

  • The LunchBox – Food For Thought – Watch It !

The LunchBox – Food For Thought – Watch It !

The Lunchbox is a moving story of two lonely individuals in a big metropolis, who accidentally get connected and developed a liking for each other. It is a simple love story made with lot of care and attention to detail.

Mr Saajan Fernandes is a widower on the verge of retirement. Ila is a neglected wife busy with her daily routine. Ila sends lunch to her husband via the Mumbai Dabbawallas. The lunch box reaches Mr Saajan instead of her husband and this is where their connect starts. They exchange notes and get some solace from each other.

The outstanding performances of Irrfan, Nimrat and Nawazuddin light up the movie. Aunty’s voice is the fourth lead in her own way. Irffan delivers another stellar performance after Paan Singh Tomar . His body language, his eyes, his his walk, his sadness, his smoking, his dilemma – Irrfan is the finest actor in the country. Nawaz is a strong match to Irrfan and he shines as Irrfan’s junior. But the heart of the movie is Nimrat Kaur – her effortless acting and her portrayal of the neglected and cheated wife moves you. You want her to be happy – you want to make her smile. Amazing act ! What a find !

The movie shines by capturing observations of Mumbai city and humans trapped in the city. The Mumbai Dabbawallas are the backbone of the movie. The Dabbawalla refuses to acknowledge the mistake and claims that Harvard School and Prince Charles have come to study their famed delivery – how can they go wrong? Mr Saajan is a Catholic and is disturbed that he will get a vertical burial. “I’ve spent my life standing in trains and buses,” he says, “now I will have to stand even when I’m dead.”

Nawaz’s Act, Playful Children, Ila’s Mother’s Loneliness, Ila’s Husband’s Adultery add strong shades in this colorful painting. Orient Fan, Streetside Painter’s Paintings, Ila’s Seduction Attempt, Banana Eaters are the other rich textures.

Go watch it ! One of the best movies of the year !

LunchBox is Food For Thought but somehow it makes you hungry after the movie !

  • The Good Road Controversy – Let Us Look At The Road Ahead !

The recent nomination of Gujarati Film ‘The Good Road’ for the Oscars In Best Foreign Film Categry has created lot of controversy. It is all fire and rage against the movie.

Let us look at the issues.

    1. Better Films Lost Out – The Ship Of Theseus And The LunchBox !

Lot of people believe that films like ‘The LunchBox’ and ‘The Ship Of Theseus’ and ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ would have been better choices. I also agree that ‘The LunchBox’ and ‘The Ship Of Theseus’ could have worked better. But this happens every year.

Year 2012 : Barfi was India’s nomination. Everyone felt that Paan Singh Tomar, Kahaani, Deool, The Dirty Picture were better films and could have better chances.

Year 2010: Peepli Live was our choice. Udaan was definitely a better movie.

Year 2007: Do you really think Eklavya was the best choice? Chak De India, Gandhi My Father, Guru or Dharm could have given more teeth to Indian representation.

Year 2005: Paheli was the Indian choice in 2005. It was selected ahead of Parineeta, Swades, Page 3, Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi. I would rooted Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi or Swades.

My all time favorite – Jeans in 1998 !

So it happens every year – nothing new.

    2. Wrong Depiction of Gujarati / Indian Culture

As Vidya Balan said in The Dirty Picture, films are made for entertainment, entertainment and entertainment. Not all Oscar nominations are made only for social message.

Also, The Good Road’s depiction of certain issues could be a reality which we may want to ignore. Did SlumDog Millionaire represent India correct? Does BA Pass represent India correctly?

I understand that movies with universal message and human stories appeal to the Oscar jury. The Good Road has struck a chord with Indian jury – it might also strike a chord in foreign shores. Also, apart from the message, there are also the marketing and lobbying efforts that determine the Oscar victory.

    3. Political Angle

    No comments here !

Overall, I think it was very sad to see the negative publicity around ‘The Good Road’. I believe that it is natural for ‘The LunchBox’ team to be disappointed. It is a great movie – one of the best movies in recent time. Even ‘The Ship Of Theseus’ is a class apart. Maybe they would have been great choices. But now that choice is made, let us stand behind it. Let us make it win !

The bright side is that all these three movies are made by first time film-makers. It give us great hope. The Indian Cinema is lucky to have these gems. They have more movies left in them and this critical and commercial acclaim will only encourage them to take bigger risks.

Second, NFDC produced ‘The Good Road’ and ‘The Lunchbox’. It represents another positive note. Kiran Rao picked up ‘The Ship Of Theseus’ and Karan Johar picked up ‘The LunchBox’ after the production. It means studios are willingness to support good cinema and give it a wider release. A great victory for all.

So – Let us look a the road ahead. Let us support this movie. Let us help it win ! It is now India’s case !

  • Life Is Beautiful – Cherish It With Safety

Life Is Beautiful – Cherish It With Safety

Accidents bring lot of dreams and aspirations to a crash. Often with blood and tears. The pointer of guilt is a secondary factor as the biggest damage is already done.

Though destiny cannot be changed, we can change our habits to reduce the damage:

    1. Helmets – Helmets can reduce the extent of damage. All people on two-wheelers need to wear it. It is not cool to not wear the helmets – though many think it otherwise.
    2. Mobiles – Mobiles have changed us as human beings. Conversations can distract us from the road situation and blind us to impending disasters. I amazed to see young men and women speaking on mobile with and without hands-free. People fix mobile phone in the helmet and talk. Women drive Activa with a single hand. Please avoid it.
    3. Speed – Speed Thrills. Speed Kills. Let us get our highs and adrenaline rushes from our achievements, great work. Life is not a Xbox game.
    4. Traffic Rules – Traffic rules exist for a reason. We need to be aware and obey the basic traffic rules. Ahmedabad is notorious for the lack of traffic sense. Why? Let us be the change. Let us not break traffic rules. Let us avoid the temptation of going in the wrong side. Let us avoid the temptation of jumping the light.

Let us always remember that someone is waiting for us at home. Loved ones and their entire world depends on you. Many times, parents have cut their stomaches, sacrificed dreams and given up luxuries to educate us and see us go ahead in life. Let us value that.

  • Subroto Bagchi On Re-Inventing Oneself !

Subroto Bagchi On Re-Inventing Oneself !

Subroto Bagchi – One of the most wonderful and humble persons you will ever meet ! I had the good fortune of meeting this amazing human being and brilliant mind today.

Subroto is one of the highly popular and engaging authors. His books connect with us due to the sheer honesty and genuineness. I have read all his books and I am his ardent fan. Hence I grabbed the opportunity to meet him today when CII organized the round-table discussion with him. I and few other IT Professionals met him at EDI, Gandhinagar today.

Utpal asked Subroto about the different roles described in his book. Subroto explained the different roles as under:
    1. Rainmaker – Every organization needs these people – people who can get business. Every sales person should be a rainmaker.
    2. Thought Leader – People who can see ‘Day After Tomorrow’. People who are visionaries and connect dots which do not exist !
    3. Ninjas – People who can get flawless execution done without process violation within the time and budget constraints.
    4. Coach – People who can train and mentor people.

Every organization needs a good mix of these roles to succeed. Organizations cannot be just Ninjas alone or Rainmaker alone.

He urged everyone of us to get a formal assessment done and understand where we stand. What is our dominant profile. And dominant profile is like our DNA – it cannot be fundamentally changed. Formal assessment will lead us to our growth – sometimes we think we are Leopards though we might be actually a Jackal !

    Subroto_Bagchi_2

I (Ash) requested Subroto to share how we transformed himself and grew himself in MindTree’s journey from ‘Idea To IPO’. Subroto explained that he thought there were four key pillars:

    1. Humility : Humility is very essential. We need to be receptive. Actually, CEO has to be like beggar !
    2. Unusual Sources : Seek information and ideas from unusual sources. Cultivate white space time – it is very important. Important ideas do not need to happen in board rooms – they might happen in bath-tubs. And when bathtub ideas happen, do not wait for market validation or excel forecast – trust your intuition !
    3. Mental Agility : Practice mental agility. Mind needs to be agile and challenge itself. Sometimes mental agility happens with displacement – change of city etc.
    4. Sense of Purpose : The most important factor ! The purpose determines your power in life. The practical examples of Intel, Microsoft and Dalai Lama drove home this point effectively.

Very beautiful insights – worth internalizing in life !

Subroto also explained that entrepreneurs need to create more leaders – leaders who can see the big picture and who can have critical questioning ability. Entrepreneurs fail when they always surround people who think like them and are sycophants.

    Subroto recommended the following resources:
    1. Book: A Whole New Mind – Why Right-brainers Will Rule the Future is a book by Daniel H. Pink
    2. Movie Documentary : Infinite Vision
    3. Book: Leading with Questions – How Leaders Find the Right Solutions By Knowing What To Ask

Apart from the amazing experience, my reward was to get his personally autographed book ! Happy !!!

  • Jobs: The Genius Is Missing !

Jobs: The Genius Is Missing !

Jobs Movie is a big letdown.

I am an Apple fan. I am a Apple consumer since early 2000s. I have been interested in Steve Jobs, his leadership, his presentation skills, his innovation. I am aware that he was a flawed and an eccentric character. I loved Walter Issacon’s biography. Naturally, I was doubly excited about Jobs movie since its announcement – it married my two interests – Apple and Movies.

Jobs movie captures only some moments of Jobs’ eventful life. The events are also given a passing reference. Jobs life has a perfect screenplay, which is not exploited fully.

Apple produces glamorous products with story and magic around it, Jobs Movie does not !

Steve was a great marketer and a greater businessman. He had a strange ability to spot magic and push people to innovation. He rallied the troops at Apple and made it the most valuable company in the world. This is not captured in the movie.

I found that Woz was made to sound like a comical character – a second rung side-kick. Sculley episode was totally underplayed. The Lisa part was not given equal justice as well. The way Woz was cheated, or stock options denied to early members, making of Macintosh etc could have been effectively exploited. The dialogue between him and his designer at the end sounded very very fake and gospelic. You see that funny episode and other small moments like parking in disability spot.

Many people expecting to see iPhone, iPad and other stories will be highly disappointed. This is outside movie’s frame. So is his cancer episode. For non-tech masses and many emerging countries, the context will be missing.

The movie does not do justice to Jobs. It has many parts of his life but sum is lesser than parts. The movie could have been in the same league as The Social Network to become a business case study for leadership and technology business. It is not !

The genius is missing in the movie.
