  • Nobel Prize For Innovation

I came across an interesting email from Harvard Business Review today – Nobel Prize For Innovation!

Picture the year 2050. Has innovation improved the world in a substantial way? Has it solved our most pressing issues — healthcare, poverty, climate change, income inequality? Or have our best and brightest used their smarts to create even more social-media platforms? Let’s hope for the former. But how can we help make that happen? Awarding a Nobel Prize for innovation could help. The prestige and magnitude of such an award could encourage inventors, entrepreneurs, and innovators to reach for world-changing ideas.

  • The Good Road Controversy – Let Us Look At The Road Ahead !

The recent nomination of Gujarati Film ‘The Good Road’ for the Oscars In Best Foreign Film Categry has created lot of controversy. It is all fire and rage against the movie.

Let us look at the issues.

    1. Better Films Lost Out – The Ship Of Theseus And The LunchBox !

Lot of people believe that films like ‘The LunchBox’ and ‘The Ship Of Theseus’ and ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ would have been better choices. I also agree that ‘The LunchBox’ and ‘The Ship Of Theseus’ could have worked better. But this happens every year.

Year 2012 : Barfi was India’s nomination. Everyone felt that Paan Singh Tomar, Kahaani, Deool, The Dirty Picture were better films and could have better chances.

Year 2010: Peepli Live was our choice. Udaan was definitely a better movie.

Year 2007: Do you really think Eklavya was the best choice? Chak De India, Gandhi My Father, Guru or Dharm could have given more teeth to Indian representation.

Year 2005: Paheli was the Indian choice in 2005. It was selected ahead of Parineeta, Swades, Page 3, Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi. I would rooted Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi or Swades.

My all time favorite – Jeans in 1998 !

So it happens every year – nothing new.

    2. Wrong Depiction of Gujarati / Indian Culture

As Vidya Balan said in The Dirty Picture, films are made for entertainment, entertainment and entertainment. Not all Oscar nominations are made only for social message.

Also, The Good Road’s depiction of certain issues could be a reality which we may want to ignore. Did SlumDog Millionaire represent India correct? Does BA Pass represent India correctly?

I understand that movies with universal message and human stories appeal to the Oscar jury. The Good Road has struck a chord with Indian jury – it might also strike a chord in foreign shores. Also, apart from the message, there are also the marketing and lobbying efforts that determine the Oscar victory.

    3. Political Angle

    No comments here !

Overall, I think it was very sad to see the negative publicity around ‘The Good Road’. I believe that it is natural for ‘The LunchBox’ team to be disappointed. It is a great movie – one of the best movies in recent time. Even ‘The Ship Of Theseus’ is a class apart. Maybe they would have been great choices. But now that choice is made, let us stand behind it. Let us make it win !

The bright side is that all these three movies are made by first time film-makers. It give us great hope. The Indian Cinema is lucky to have these gems. They have more movies left in them and this critical and commercial acclaim will only encourage them to take bigger risks.

Second, NFDC produced ‘The Good Road’ and ‘The Lunchbox’. It represents another positive note. Kiran Rao picked up ‘The Ship Of Theseus’ and Karan Johar picked up ‘The LunchBox’ after the production. It means studios are willingness to support good cinema and give it a wider release. A great victory for all.

So – Let us look a the road ahead. Let us support this movie. Let us help it win ! It is now India’s case !

  • Dravid’s Wisdom

    Dravid’s Wisdom

Rahul Dravid is an leader who walks the talk. He is a leader who is grounded, humble, sincere, achiever and team-player. He has taken a stand on the current cricket controversy – he speaks his mind and he is fearless. We know many ex-cricketers who just sit back and enjoy perks from BCCI. He has chosen to show the mirror. Great Act !

Here is a Quick Edit which appeared on Mint. Worth repeating !

Rahul Dravid has always been a class act, both on the field and off it. It is thus good to see him remind cricket administrators, in an interview, that the success of the game rides on the loyalty of the fans. He had made a similar point in his wonderful Sir Donald Bradman Oration in 2011.

Indian cricket is facing a credibility crisis, with administrative turf wars, betting controversies and conflicts of interest. The situation was similar in the mid-1990s. Dravid was one of a generation of cricketers who not only came together in a formidable combination on field, but also brought credibility to the game with their exemplary behaviour. The others were Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly, V.V.S. Laxman and Anil Kumble.

Dravid makes a point that has far broader relevance: Politicians owe their jobs to voters, CEOs to shareholders, bureaucrats to citizens, journalists to readers.

  • The Blank Check Theory – Achieving Breakthrough Results

The Blank Check Theory – Achieving Breakthrough Results

Recently, I Revisited An Unusual Management Technique – The Blank Check Theory. The Theory Inspires Managers To Pursue Audacious Goals Without Worrying About Budgets.

The Thought Is Simple. Managers And Leaders Are Taught To Work Within Limited Available Resources. Budgets Restrict Creativity And Imagination Of Managers – As Everyone Is Always Making Trade-Offs. What If Resources Were Unlimited? What If Managers Were Free To Dream Big And Act Without Worrying About Budgets?

The Blank Check Theory Believes That When Teams Work With Blank Check, They Deliver Outstanding Results. The Are Accountable For Results But They Decide Their Budgets. They Are More Inspired And Act With More Ownership.

The Concept Of The Blank Check Was Floated By Sanjay Khosla, Kraft’s President Of Developing Markets, And Mohanbir Sawhney, A Professor At The Kellogg School Of Management At Northwestern University, Writing In Strategy & Business Magazine. They Shared Multiple Examples Of How Blank Check Allowed Teams To Envision And Achieve Breakthrough Results.

For Instance In 2007 Tang, The Old Powdered Breakfast Drink, Was Doing Poorly Around The World, So Executives At Kraft Gave People In Charge Of The Brand In Various Countries A ‘Blank Check,’ Essentially Urging Them To Dream Big And Not Worry About Resources. The Results Were Astounding. In The Five Years, Tang Doubled Sales Outside The U.S.

Kraft Applied The Same Theory In Mexico And Got Amazing Results. Kraft Gave Its Cadbury Brand In India A “Blank Check,” And The Innovations There Included Doubling The Use Of Store Display Cases That Both Presented The Chocolate Attractively And Kept It From Melting; Greatly Increasing The Advertising Budget; And Marketing The Product With A New Focus On The Indian Tradition Of Having Sweets At Important Social Moments. The Result: Record Revenues.

The Blank Check Teams Are Held Strictly Accountable For Quantifiable Results. They Have Freedom To Act But Within The Set Of Ground Rules To Ensure The Initiatives Stay On Strategy And Produce Results.

There Are Five Rules To Make The Blank Check Theory Work:
    1. Pick The Best Bets – Carefully Figure Out What Part Of The Business To Target, Looking For An Area With Past Success But Definite Room For Real Growth.
    2. Select The Team – Pick The Team To Bet On, Looking For People Who Are Naturally Accountable For The Business Area But Who Also Show Great Potential.
    3. Define Goals And Plans – Define The Goals And Plans, Setting Clear, Measurable Targets And Quickly Getting A Basic Proposal From The Team, Not More Than Two Pages Long.
    4. Kickoff The Initiative – Write The Blank Check, So That The Team Really Knows It Is Authorized To Proceed And Can Do Whatever It Needs To Do.
    5. Monitor Results – Monitor The Results, Setting Milestones With Clear Metrics, And Of Course Expecting A Certain Amount Of Failure Along The Way.

The Typical First Reaction To A Blank Cheque Challenge Is Skepticism. People In Corporate Settings Have Been Trained To Think In Terms Of Budgets And Belt Tightening.

Khosla And Sawhney Feel They’ve Proven That The “Blank Check” Can Make Great Things Happen. They Conclude:

Even Seemingly Sleepy Businesses Hold Tremendous Untapped Potential. If Business Leaders Can Liberate Their People From The Limitations Of Budgets And Resources, They Will Find That Their People Will Surprise Both Leaders And Themselves With What They Can Achieve. This Is The Power Of Blank Checks.

  • Can Aamir Khan Change India?

    Can Aamir Khan Change India?

Trust Aamir Khan to break the mould and challenge the environment. The Marketing Genius with a Midas Touch has once again attempted to change the game. This time he wants India and Indians to change. A formidable challenge – but even if he changes one Indian, it is worth the effort. Atleast he is being a part of change, rather than being an arm-chair spectator.

Aamir Khan’s foray in National Television ‘Satyameve Jayate‘ has all the right ingredients. A national topic. A problem that is stopping India from becoming a Shining India. The opening topic was the issue of female foeticide. The topic was given complete justice and all perspectives of the issue were covered. The ‘Call to Action’ was the petition and the donation. The huge awareness to the cause is a great service as well.

Aamir’s marketing mind ensured that all the Star Properties and Doodarshan ensure that India does not miss the message. His collaborations with Airtel, Axis Bank and Reliance Foundation are the best advertisements for the power of marketing. Donate money to the causes via Airtel SMS. Donate Money via Online or Branch Banking at Axis Bank. Reliance Foundation matches the donations of the Indians.

The idea is great. The causes will be relevant to growing India. He is doing the right thing. Can he bring Jasmine Revolution to India? Can he change the indifferent Indians? Can he change the social thinking? He is using all his prowess, popularity and intelligence Good ideas need good luck and good support. Let us support him in our own way – time, effort, support and money!

King of Good Times Vijay Mallya Wins Gandhi’s Prize Memorabilia

King of Good Times Vijay Mallya Wins Gandhi’s Prize Memorabilia. Gandhians will be shocked but it is fair. He has made the bid and won it legally. Do not blame his wealth to his liqour – the country allows people to produce, sell and drink it.

Blame the people from whom this memorabilia went. It was with some custodians who did not do their duty.

Hey Ram – Gandhi would not care about this auction !

  • Tata Nano Launch : A Day To Celebrate!

Tata Nano Launch : A Day To Celebrate!

Tata Nano was launched yesterday at Auto Expo in New Delhi. The USD 2500 car is the world cheapest car and positioned as “People’s car”. Tata Motors, the company behind Tata Nano is planning to complete it portfolio by snapping Ford’s Jaguar and Land Rover, the iconic brands.

    Tata Nano

A few thoughts for Tata Nano:

    1. Tata Motor’s Nano launch is an important day for Indian Enterprise and Indian Auto Makers. It is a day no less important than Diwali, Eid and Christmas for visionaries. It is a day of celebration of Indian spirit, fulfilling a dream and changing the dynamics of Auto market. Cheers to Ratan Tata and his team.

    2. The real surprise is that instead of celebrating, we are maligning Ratan Tata and Tata Nano. Never before in the history of Indian passenger cars, such a coordinated and high-pitch attack seen on a particular company. Anti-globalization, anti-industralization, environmentalists and media-savvy NGOs have been cooperating with politicians – a rare first. People did not criticize when Suzuki or Hyundai or Skoda.

    3. Tata Nano has been criticized for pollution, clogging of roads, consumerism etc. But where was this criticism when all other car launches have been happening since years. Why target Tata alone?

Tata Nano is compliant will all the regulations of the land. Its safety levels are higher. It is Euro 4 compliant. And let us be aware that Autos, Taxis and other vehicles running on adulterated fuel pollute the environment more.

If Government of India has not cared for promotion of public transport, for development of roads-infrastructure through-out India, will blaming Tata solve the problem? Ratan Tata runs Tata Motors not Government of India.

    4. Government of India today talks of Inclusive Growth. Will Tata Nano not fulfill dreams of millions of people in small towns and villages across the nation? Will Tata Nano not create multiplier effect in various parts of the nation? Will it no link towns and villages where public transport is not available or inconsistent?

    5. Enam Securities’ Vallabh Bhansali recently said that Indians are succeeding all over the world, not India. And world is acknowledging achievements of India, not Indians. With each passing day, I am admire Vallabh Bhansali’s wise observation and see how true it is. I also recollect Indian Crab theory. Tata‘s will succeed all over the world as they are planning to expand their empire outside India. They have Jaguar and Rover now. We Indians will lose in form of jobs and multiplier industries – which will be the real loss. And that too when we have got Manmohan Singh and Chidambaram on our national scene.

    6. How are competitors reacting? Maruti is acting like a loser and a passive player today. Hyundai is approaching wait and watch policy. Volvo MD and other foreign MDs have stated this as an important step of emerging countries and India.

    7. Finally, Mr R K Pachauri. We celebrated your win. We think today was another day for our Indian victory. I hope your opinion will change.

  • Money Habits of Rich People

I was analyzing the habits of successful people, who also happen to be well-off financially. I gathered these habits from online browsing and book reading.

Rich people had the following characteristics:

    No Credit Card Debt
    No Smoking
    No Drinking
    No Big Weekends
    No TV
    Less Clutter
    Less Materialistic
    Less Needs
    More Peace of Mind

I am sure many of us will be surprised. The real rich do not show off or flaunt their money. They are rich because they understand the value of money. The value of money is not determined by spending power. The power of money is the power to give and make a difference in lives of others.

If we are looking for money, we will never get it. If we are driven by it, money will elude us. This century is about ideas, not money.

  • India & US : Democracy @ Work

My dear friend and a great artist, Harnish Jani has a unique take on the Shilpa Shetty – Richard Gere Kissing Controversy.

Having been to India several times, Richard Gere should have known the following by now:
Democratic differences between USA & India –
In USA, you can kiss in public places but cannot shit

In India, you can shit in public places but cannot kiss!
