    Rediscover Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi: A man synonymous with India. Nobody deserved Nobel Peace Prize more than Mahatma Gandhi. Nobody deserved more respect and love than Gandhi. But, nobody gets more criticism than Gandhi( especially by Indians). So isn’t it quite surprising for many of you to see Gandhi topping the list of people I admire.

Gandhi was no emperor, not a military general, not a president nor a prime minister. He was neither pacifist nor a cult guru. Who was Gandhi ? If anything, Mohandas K. Gandhi was a constant experimenter. Mahatma gave us the freedom by revolutionary concept of non-violence, non-cooperation and satyagraha. He was the best communicator known to us. He won the hearts of people even in a new nation like South Africa.

During my Gandhi sessions, I reiterate that he was the best example of servant leadership. He was equally terrific example of authentic and situational leadership. Beyond his politics and philosophy, he was a linguist and health expert. I am glad that Gujaratilexicon has played a small part in digitising his dictionary. His ideas on women empowerment, village economy, self-reliance,  untouchability and health are timeless.

Majority of Indians have not understood Gandhi and we label him as a bygone phenomenon. But I feel he is more relevant today than ever before.

Gandhi is in us. Let’s rediscover him.

    Will we?

    I get hope from T S Eliot’s lines:

We shall not cease from exploration

And the end of all our exploring

Will be to arrive where we started

And know the place for the first time.

    Gandhi Once Said :

Opinion is a serious Gujarati monthly magazine published from London for the last 14 years. Opinion has earned a respectable place in Gujarati journalism for its views, commentaries, articles and literary contributions. The magazine covers all aspects of life, but is focused essentially on literary and cultural affairs of India, especially Gujarat, and those of the Gujarati Diaspora in the U.K. It is a must-read magazine to those who want to follow the developments in the related fields in Gujarat and U.K. Its issues contain some very useful and original material about Indian Diaspora in East Africa and the U.K. Following some basic principles reminiscent of Mahatma Gandhi — its title derives from ‘Indian Opinion’, the journal that Mahatma Gandhi edited in South Africa –, Opinion follows committed and independent line of thinking and action. As a matter of principle, it has never accepted any advertisements to earn its revenue :  its only revenue source is its readers’ subscriptions and contributions.

Opinion was born with a planned end date. However, recently, when the conclusion of Opinion Magazine as per the original vision was informed to readers, the Opinion office was inundated with requests to reconsider the decision. Opinion had touched people and shaped views beyond imagination. The original vision could not be compromised. At the same time, feedback and views of readers could not be disregarded. Finally, it was decided to arrive at a win-win idea – Digital Version of Opinion.

Opinion Online marches ahead with the strong flag of Opinion. It will continue to showcase the best of contemporary diasporic literature. It will also highlight the glimpses of diasporic culture, language and history. An interesting feature is the profile section where the stalwarts and hidden stars are brought closer to the reader. Opinion Online is also a treasure house of contemporary diasporic literature. Opinion is a subject of M Phil and other research level studies. Now, all the editions of printed Opinion can be accessed from the site. Opinion is a witness to the changing times and the publication is rich source of information for academicians, researchers and lovers of diaspora.

Opinion Online is a interactive website. Readers can write back, rate the articles and give feedback. The site has planned other enhancements including Live Chat with noted authors, polls, cartoons etc.

King of Good Times Vijay Mallya Wins Gandhi’s Prize Memorabilia

King of Good Times Vijay Mallya Wins Gandhi’s Prize Memorabilia. Gandhians will be shocked but it is fair. He has made the bid and won it legally. Do not blame his wealth to his liqour – the country allows people to produce, sell and drink it.

Blame the people from whom this memorabilia went. It was with some custodians who did not do their duty.

Hey Ram – Gandhi would not care about this auction !

  • Gandhi Is Back!

    “I’ll be back!”
    Terminator, 1984

Well, move over Arnie, Gandhi is back in international mindspace. Wow! Gandhigiri tops the list of Hot Trends in 2006 in India. Gandhi beats Sensex, xbox 360, Nach Baliye, FIFA World Cup, iPod, Blogging, FM Radio etc. to get to the top as the hottest idea of 2006.

Courses in Universities, Gandhi Topis, Quiz Contest, People Practising Gandhigiri, Increased Sale of Gandhian Books, Cover Stories in Leading Magazines – all are the proof of renewed interest in Gandhi.

Well, I am not surprised. I recollect an incident which took place nearly a decade ago in my life.

Once we had session in our college on 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, an amazing book by Stephen Covey. After an interesting and effective presentation, I asked the trainer the following question : Why is that Indians are forgetting Gandhi while West is rediscovering Gandhi? He was both surprised and impressed to see a young college lad being interested in Gandhi. He could also understand my concern on the cool trend of criticizing Gandhi without understanding him.

He smiled and answered me through one simple quote from T S Eliot. The quote was:
We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time
    ~ T S Eliot, Four Quartlets

Indians are just discovering West and exploring it. They will soon realize importance of Gandhi when they will come back home after the Western Trip.

Tons and tons of pages have been written about how Lage Raho Munnabhai brought Gandhi back in Indian hearts and minds. Now we have people organizing constructive programs on Gandhi and colleges starting courses on Gandhigiri. TV shows debate more about Gandhi than Rakhi Sawant.

The fact is Gandhi can never be ignored. Gandhi is not ephemeral. Gandhi is timeless. Gandhi is the soul of world.
