  • Kumble : The End Of An Era

Anil Kumble announced his retirement on Sunday. A sad day, but this day had to come.

I have special admiration for Anil Kumble. He is the man of character. He is the man of values. He is the man with competitive spirit. He is the man of courage.

He is a great role model for everyone – across sports, across countries. A perfect gentleman.

I remember his bowling in Antigua against West Indies with a broken jaw. That is commitment.
I remember his bowling in Kotla against Pakistan where he got perfect 10 wickets. That is excellence.

He was never involved in any ego-clash, controversies in 19 long years. That is character.

Kumble. A special era has ended with you. It was privilege watching you. It will take time and class to reach to your standards.

  • Life Is Precious..Simple Care Can Help!

    Hi!

Pratik has recently posted a wonderful discussion with a Fire Brigade Officer. It has wonderful insights and tips. I got lot of knowledge and you will also benefit from it. Read It Here – Chat With Fire Brigade Officer

    Excerpts:

Talking about safety at our homes he cited the example of most Mumbaikars whose houses are not designed from a fire safety perspective. Most of the houses have the hall, followed by the kitchen and bedrooms behind or adjacent to it. If there is fire in the kitchen, people in the bedroom are stucked. Above all 90% of the people do not have fire exits in their bedroom and whatever window they have are mounted with fixed grills.

He also talked about lack of planning in police encounters. He said that when police plans for a raid or encounter they do not take a ambulance along with them to foresee any unfortunate incident. He talked about the case of Mr. MC Sharma who sucummbed to the bullets fired at him at the recent terrorist encounter in Delhi.

    More Tips:

    a) One or two members from every house should undertake fire marshall training. It is a one day course but prepares you to tackle fire emergencies

    b) If possible keep smoke detectors and Fire sprinklers at your home/office. They are like your neighbours who will help you first and foremost

    c) Know your escape routes in the event of fire. In an office environment it is must to have fire drill periodically. why only office even buildings and complexes should have them

    d) Cooking area-Never leave cooking unattended. Keep kids away from it

    e) Conceal all your electrical wirings..they are the most dangerous

Today is September 11, 2008. It is seven years since one of the most tragic incidents of the recent times.

Anniversaries are time to reflect and introspect. The world and US has moved on since Sep 11, 2001. America has changed attention from Osama to Obama. Coincidentally, ‘Change’ is Obama’s mantra for America!

Change is the only permanent thing!

  • Micchami Dukkadam – Seeking Forgiveness

Today is the last day of the holy Jain Festival – Paryushan. All Jains seek forgiveness today and the day is marked by worship and fasting across the world.

All Jains seek forgiveness through sharing cards and expressing ‘Micchami Dukkadam’. The following is one such example:

On this auspicious occasion, after the Paryushan and Samvatsari Pratikraman,

we wish you all Micchami Dukkadam!

We ask forgiveness for any harm we may have caused you,

by thoughts, words or actions, knowingly or unknowingly.

    Micchami Dukkadam

  • Hero of Trust Vote : Somnath Chatterjee

In my recent post, I had written about the Omar Abdullah and quizzed about the real hero of Parliament Trust Vote. No, it was not Manmohan Singh. The real hero was Somnath Chatterjee, the Speaker of the house.

He emerged as a person who placed the Speaker’s post and his duties above the party politics. He listened to his voice of conscience and acted accordingly. He ensured that the dignity of the post is not affected. He upheld the responsibilities entrusted to him. He fought his own partymen for safeguarding Indian democracy. Quite surprising, that we have politicians like him as well! He defies the typical politician stereotype.

Of course, Somnath Chatterjee paid the price. He was expelled from his party. The party for which he had worked for 40 years and helped it grow. The party for which he maid sacrifices. He was the uncontested and unanimous choice of all parties for the speaker’s post. His is one of the most honest and unblemished careers in Indian polity.

Cheers to Somnath Chaterjee. We need more politicians like him.

Read Somnath Chatterjee’s letter in Indian Express where he spoke for himself.

  • Leadership : Defining Moments

The Indian Parliament had a very important debate last week. The survival of the government was in question. The built up had usual suspense, controversies, charges of horse-trading, mud-slinging etc. In fact, the session itself had huge drama with some MPs bringing cash in the parliament and alleging foul play. Well, we were not surprised 🙂

However, a few things stood out. We are all pleasantly surprised to see that there were some good discussions. Indian democracy is not dead.

An important surprise was rise of few individuals. One of the heroes of the session was Omar Abdullah. Omar Abdullah’s speech has changed the entire nation’s perception of him. It has put him in limelight as a leader to watch for. In his home state of Jammu & Kashmir, he is a hero.

Omar Abdullah said that it was an instinctive speech. He spoke from his heart. He touched upon controversial topics like Amarnath Issue, Gujarat Riots etc. He supported the trust vote. I am not commenting on the content of his speech. I am showcasing his leadership moment.

Omar’s start to the speech was exemplary. His managed to get the attention of all. It helped that his tone and style were different.

People loved his comment of the common enemies of poor. He struck a chord with the people at large. He knew that his audience was beyond the parliament house. He knew that India is a young nation with its  youth having access to Nokia, Facebook and TouTube.

Of course, he spoke of his political choices and hit back at his opponents. But he did it very cleverly.

His speech was short and to the point. No preaching.

He made a mark for himself on that day and was one of the important heroes of the session and recent politics.

But the Hero No. 1 is somebody else. Any guesses?
