Gentle and charming unveiling of patriarchal and socially blinding veils! A must watch!
Kiran Rao’s Laapata Ladies is an authentic, sincere and original story showcased in a very beautiful and warm manner. Like 12th Fail, this is a big-hearted story of small-town India.
The feel-good satire tells the tale of two brides who are swapped accidentally and how they find themselves while lost. As the story progresses, lot of societal issues are addressed but with humour and gentle treatment – never preachy! A warm hug is stronger than long conversations!
Women empowerment, role of education, patriarchy, female bonding, political games, outgrown customs and traditional woes – all are beautifully interwoven. But the movie is never boring!
The actors are outstanding. Phool and Jaya as the lost brides, the melancholic Deepak, the railway platform samaritans including Manju and the extended family – all are spot-on. The most impactful character is actor Ravi Kishan as the policeman who is scary, corrupt but finds his conscience – the most layered, balancing and impressive act.
The story and screenplay is top-notch. The writing and direction is so perfect that no dialogue or scene feels out of place. Phool hiding behind “Use Me” dustbin, Manju’s fraud theory and changing names of villages – all are subtle and smartly intelligent.
Even Manju’s frustration “Bhawra bana ke rakh diya hai sabko” is beautiful. Or this dialogue of Deepak: “Jevar chori doi dukh paana; chhota dukh chori, bada dukh thaana – wow!
Ram Sampath knows how to complement the simplicity with beautiful music.
Full marks to Kiran Rao! Watch this beautiful tale of positivity, emotional intelligence and hope that challenge the status quo!
The First Words From The First Day First Show: Thought Provoking. Beautifully Simple Humour. Amazing Dialogues. Lovely Music. Emotional Roller Coaster. Humanity. Patriotism.
The Rajkumar Hirani’s Midas Touch Ensures A Hat-Trick For Swades Shah Rukh Khan.
The Perils, Costs & Empathetic Angles To Illegal Immigration Practice Is The Focus Of Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki. The Movie Is A Triumph Over His Last Outing Sanju But Still Below Par Of 3 Idiots & PK.
Shahrukh Is An Actor In His Chak De India Avatar, Not An Employee Of SRK Brand. Vicky Kaushal Continues His Purple Patch & Once Again Outshines The Main Lead In Parts – Like In Sanju Movie. Tapsee Has A Meaty Role & Shows A Strong Arc. Boman Irani & Supporting Cast Is Impressive.
Smart & Sharp Dialogues. Soulful Music That Carries The Story Ahead. The Screenplay Could Have Been Better & Direction Is Superb. SRK Kurtas Make A Statement.
Past Lives: A Poignant Painting Of Relationships, Identities & Possibilities!
One of the year’s best and a must watch movie! A slow burn movie that touches your heart! A though provoking movie that spans time and continents!
Celine Song’s debut movie beautifully captures the lives of two childhood friends over a two decade period where they explore their relationships in the backdrop of life events. Nora & Hae Sung are academic rivals and friends who once go on a parent brokered ‘play date’. The boy is in awe of the girl but she emigrates to Canada.
Thanks to social media and digital world, they reconnect after twelve years but begin to drift apart again as Nora is committed to her ambition and explores the life she desires. Hae Sung finally meets Nora after another twelve years, as he plans a vacation to New York to meet the established playwright Nora, who is married to writer Arthur. How the meeting unfolds and unravels the nostalgic emotions is what makes Past Lives a brilliant and reflective piece of art!
The Korean concept of “in-yeon” is central to the movie.
The movie thrives in the power of saying the unsaid – eye contact, silence, stillness, music, backdrops etc. Watch the powerful ending…..soul moving!
The movie is a master class in story telling, cinematography, music, acting and direction. Hae Sung (Yoo Teo) wins your heart as a handsome, sweet, dignified, mature and totally romantic protagonist. Nora (Greta Lee) is confused, vulnerable, practical and emotionally torn. Arthur (John Magarro) makes a great impact as Nora’s husband. Celine Song’s direction is truly amazing – full marks to her for a perfect debut.
Past Lives – A movie about love, loss, marriage, career, culture, diaspora, nostalgia, relationships and destiny! How our relationships affect our lives!
Southern Spice was the topic of Bollywood in 2022. Did Bollywood lose the plot to Southern entertainers? Yes and No.
Indian audience has been pampered by best of the global cinema in the last two years of Covid. The mediocrity is shunned. Template movie making is rejected.
Bollywood was indeed outclassed by Southern movies in the big budget masala category – RRR is roaring across India and making an impact at Oscars. Kantara posters are in North India. KGF2 rules. Pre-Bahubali days, no South Indian movie would last beyond a week in North. Today, they are having a golden run. Southern movies have shown that audience will return to cinema – give them worthy content!
Ponniyn Selvan 1, Yashoda, Sita Ramam and Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya He have continued the Southern supremacy. Radhe Shyam proved that audience is unforgiving.
Bollywood’s Brahmastra to Southern challenge was a mixed success – did not live to expectations. The biggest Bollywood blockbuster was also a Southern remake – Drishyam 2.
Remember 100 crore club? In 2019, 100 crore was passe, 200 crore was becoming common and 300 crore club was the new sign of success. In 2022, only a few movies hit the 100 crore club – Gangubai Kathiawadi, The Kashmir Files, Bhool Bhulaiya 2, Brahmastra and Drishyam 2. Clearly, audience is spending money wisely and Bollywood is bleeding with its self-inflicted wounds.
Shamshera, Samrat Prithviraj, Raksha Bandhan, Lala Singh Chaddha, Liger, Ram Setu, Cirkus, Jayesbhai Jordaar – Perfect examples of big names and big banners producing duds.
Bollywood did have amazing movies in 2022 as well – but they did not capture the headlines. The list is showcased below.
Gujarati Film Industry came out of age and had a steady churn of interesting movies.
Alia maintained her numero uno status with Gangubai. She was also a part of Brahmastra, Darlings and RRR. Shefali Shah rose with Salsa, Darlings and Dr G – not to forget Delhi Crime 2 and Humans.
An impeccable, thought provoking and insightful epic of human relationships and life!
When friendships break!
When existential questions hurt!
Just like every other day, Padraic visits his best friend Colm for the ritualistic trip to the local pub. Colm refuses to speak and breaks the friendship which devastates Padraic to no end. Padraic persists on winning back his friend but Colm is equally stubborn and threatens to cut off his fingers one by one if Padriac does not back off! Ouch! And shockingly, he walks the talk! Heart-breaking and horrifying!
What a story….what an impressive set of eclectic characters!
Colm is a thinker who wants to have a purposeful life and leaving a lasting impression on the world! His icy cold rejection of Colm is incisive – “I just don’t like you no more”!
Padraic just wants to be nice human being and feels kindness is what one will be remembered for! His reactions to Colm as well as his interactions with animals are moving!
Dominic is the troubled teenager who steals the show when he says “there goes that dream”!
Padriac’s sister Siobhan is a wise, well-read and strong woman with dreams and ambition…Her silence pierces as well as her retorts like “not another silent man in Inisherin”
And what an ending! Will not spoil the beans…tell what you think of it?
Colin Farell and Brendan Gleeson’s chemistry as two friends at odd is amazing! The whole range of emotions from confusion to shock to anger is well a master class in acting – expressed with eyes and body language! Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan are rock solid and lift the movie to a next level.
Martin McDonagh focusses on human relationship and small town absurdities with the backdrop of war in a remote Irish island. Life in a judgemental and probing community can be claustrophobic and maddening! The writing and screenplay is very meaningful and incisive – translated impeccably on the big screen with an emphatic treatment! The cinematography is a character in itself and transports you to the beautifully Irish countryside. The visuals and music have a calming effect – acting as a meditative healing amidst the melancholic pain!
Avatar is one of the greatest cinematic experience. A game-changing visionary movie. Apart from pathbreaking technology, it introduced us to the blue bodied Na’vi of Pandora moon, raised our environmental consciousness way before Greta Thunberg and made us feel ‘I see you’. It reigned as the highest grossing movie for a decade since its release in 2009.
Avatar 2 is called Avatar – The Way Of Water. It is second of the five instalments that will continue to be released every 2 years till 2028.
Jake Sully and his family flee the forest to take refuge with amphibian tribe Metkayina. The green canvas turns to turquoise Maldives like pristine waters. After the initial tense proceedings, things settle down and they together fight the common enemy – sky people – the humans.
The aquatic flora and fauna is the best part of the movie. Dazzling and enchanting! The whale like tulkun is the showstopper – gentle giant that is bigger than Mumbai flats. The climax is a return to Titanic world for James Cameron – even Kate Winslet joins the reunion!
Avatar 2 is a beautiful spectacle but too long and has no gripping plot to speak of. New owner Disney add family dynamics to the environment and imperialism themes. One can give James Cameron the credit to be singularly focused on the simple narrative.
Avatar – The Way Of Water is a one time big screen watch. It is debuting in more 50,000 screens at the same time across all major countries. If you do not watch it, our hearts will still go on….
A taut pop culture rich thriller with unapologetic eccentric characters! A social climber has it all – great job, beautiful fiancé and a bright future – till things go south! A femme fatale secretary and a kick-ass police officer create a mad energy of its own! And there are murders along the way!
Huma Qureshi & Radhika Apte have a blast in the intriguing murder mystery! Huma Quereshi is a riot. Radhika Apte is completely sassy. Lovely to see them enjoying in their well-written characters. Rajukumar Rao does a great job but he has been there, done that. A great ensemble cast.
The music is terrific and adds to the quirky fun. Songs like ‘ Yeh Ek Zindagi’, ‘Love you so much that I want to kill you’ ‘Bye Bye Adios’ etc are a character in itself!
Smart writing, strong screenplay, fabulous dialogues, marvellous acting and outstanding music make it a nice watch. Editing could have been better. Director Vasan Bala creates a cool cocktail of Johnny Gaddar, Sriram Raghavan and James Hadley Chase novels.
‘Rorschach’ Movie Review: Deeply Intriguing Psychological Neo Noir Thriller
A bewildering movie that justifies its title – Rorschach means a projective psychological test that uses a subject’s interpretation of 10 standard black or colored inkblot designs to assess personality traits and emotional tendencies.
The movie tests your perception of the film? Your feelings, your characteristics and you! The movie also tests the key characters in the outstanding drama – all of who showcase numerous shades of grey.
A rich businessman for Dubai arrives in a tranquil village and sets a chain of interesting events. Gradually, the pieces of puzzle unearth and we get a sense of protagonist’s true intentions arising from a mental state. I am resisting the temptation to leak the big story!
The revenge drama keep you on the edge of the seat. One is attracted to the maze and gets deeper and deeper! Though the pace gets little slow after half time when the real plot is revealed!
Mammootty shines and does full justice to the movie! What a layered and smooth performance where he surrenders to the script – you become part of his insidiousness! Acting masterclass! Hats off! But it is Bindu Panicker who outshines seething Mammootty for me – her menacing matriarch act of self-preservation is outstanding!
The movie is technically superb with music, car, house and village as impeccable components. Loved the English tracks of the movie – enhanced the mood of the film. Full marks to the director!
Kantara is a must watch movie! A true cinematic experience that deserves a big screen immersion!
Kantara is an outstanding mesh of visual extravaganza, creative storytelling and mind blowing performances! Full credit to actor director writer Rishabh Shetty for staying true to local milieu & rustic taste while avoiding the temptation to masculinize the movie like the recent southern potboilers.
Kantara brings together diverse threads to create a unique fabric:
– Human being’s search for peace and sukoon
– Local beliefs and culture
– Human greed and nature’s bounty
– Human rights and rule of law
Technically world-class, sensitive treatment, awesome cinematography and powerful vivid music take us straight to the coastal Karnataka life – the Bhoot Kala festival, the Kambala event, wild boar hunting etc. Daiva’s scream guarantees goosebumps!
The last fifteen minutes have taken the movie to next level with Rishabh’s performance – the climax will keep people talking for a long time!
Kantra – Watch it – The power of cinema that will stay on….
And yes, if you love Kantara, do not forget to watch Tumbadd – one of India’s finest movie! And the one I rate one notch higher than Kantara!
Mahatma Gandhi is one of the most significant and enduring gifts of India to
the world. And so is Bollywood. How is the relationship between India’s biggest
exports?
Mahatma Gandhi saw only two movies in his
lifetime. The first was a Hollywood movie called ‘Mission To Moscow’. And the
second one was the 1944 Indian movie ‘Ram Rajya’, which was directed by Vijay
Bhatt. Thus, he saw only one Indian movie.
Let us look at representation of Mahatma Gandhi
in movies.
Sir Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi – The Gandhi Movie of All Time
Let me first take Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi out of the way. This is
‘The Gandhi Movie of All Time’ – the one movie that everyone should watch!
It is an amazing epic of all time, a movie par excellence and a life story
beyond imagination! Everyone was at their best in the movie –actors, director, producer,
cinematographer, music director, costume designer. Nobody could have done
anything less good for this project – It was a divine duty or a ‘Sistine
chapel’ of their lives!!
The Gandhi movie swept all the major awards including Oscars, Golden Globe
& BAFTA. It won the 8 Oscars including the Best Film and Best Actor. The
movie had a very successful box office run across the world. In India, it had
an ordinary response.
Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi is a moving experience. It transforms you. It keeps you engaged. It is one of the best tributes to Gandhi and his ideals. Ben Kingsley gave a performance of his lifetime. Ben Kingsley has Indian-Gujarati roots and his original name is Krishna Pandit Bhanji. Hence it was apt to see an Indian origin Ben play the legendary role. Rohini Hattangady, Amrish Puri, Om Puri and Saeed Jaffrey enact key roles in the movie.
The trivia of movie Gandhi are endless. One of the most interesting is that
three lakh extras participated in Gandhi’s funeral procession scene in the
movie. Only a few claimed the remuneration – everyone did it as their duty and
tribute to Gandhi.
Growing as a young kid in late 80s, Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi was a
constant fixture of your Doordarshan life. Every important day including October
2, 2019 would be the day to view Gandhi. And what gem we had been offered
regularly – Maybe like other Doordarshan offerings like Tamas, Buniyaad, Yeh Jo
Hai Zindagi, National Programme of Music, we ignored the priceless gift!
Gandhi & Bollywood
Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi remains one of most significant movies of our
times. But Richard’s Gandhi is not a Bollywood movie. It is a British movie.
Let us turn our eyes to Bollywood.
One of the first though indirect portrayal of Gandhi on screen was in the
Dwarkadas Sampat’s 1920 movie ‘Mahatma Vidur’. The character Vidur was dressed
and walked like Gandhiji.
The first significant Indian attempt on Gandhiji was by Shyam Benegal. The 1996 movie ‘The Making Of The Mahatma’ focussed on the 21 years of Gandhi’s life in South Africa and his transformation. It is true that Gandhi discovered himself, his philosophy and political tools in South Africa. The movie is based on his South African experiences including the iconic incident of being thrown out of the train at Pietermaritzburg station. As Gopal Gandhi said later that the man who stood up from the fall was a revolutionary! Actor Rajit Kapoor did a splendid job and the movie is a great piece of work. The movie failed at the box-office though it won few awards.
Kamal Hasan made a movie named ‘Hey Ram’ in 2000 and depicted the struggle
of a man trying to kill Mahatma Gandhi. Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukherji joined
Kamal Hasan but they could not save the movie from tanking at the box office.
Anupam Kher and Urmila Matondkar had used Gandhi’s killing as a backdrop Jahnu
Barua directed 2005 movie ‘Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Maara’. Anil Kapoor produced
‘Gandhi My Father’ in 2007. The movie was based on Feroz Khan’s play and was
adapted for the big screen. The movie focussed on the troubled relationship
between Gandhiji and his son Hiralal Gandhi. Many people amplified Harilal’s
negative views on Gandhi – How ‘Father Of The Nation’ could not be a great
father to his own son! But it backfired. The movie also bombed at the box
office.
Movies on Gandhi were not getting enough Gandhis! (currency notes)
It had to take Rajkumar Hirani’s Midas touch to turn the tide. Leveraging
his unique story telling skills and humour, he offered a completely new
perspective on Gandhi. ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’ did what thousands of historians,
hundreds of books and several organisations could not do – bring Gandhi back in
fashion. The simple story of a loveable Mumbai don using Gandhi’s principles to
solve challenges and win his lady love. Munnabhai’s Gandhigiri was observed
throughout the nation in ensuing months and years. It was Hiran’s excellent
vision, script and direction that delivered a genuine blockbuster at the movie.
‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’ was the biggest hits of 2006. Producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra
smiled all the way to the bank. More importantly, it made Gandhi cool and
offered a great new alternative narrative and a perspective on Gandhi to the
youth. He brought Gandhi out of the statues and photo frames and books into the
lives of youth. A great achievement! The power of good cinema!
Amit Rai made a movie ‘Road To Sangam’ in 2009 starring Paresh Rawal and Om
Puri. The movie focussed on immersion of the ashes of Gandhiji against a
communal backdrop. Gandhi’s great grand-son Tushar Gandhi played a Cameo in the
movie and it won several awards. But it was a box office disaster. Rakesh
Ranjan Kumar’s 2011 ’Gandhi To Hitler’
is based on Gandhi’s letters to Hitler.
Apart from the above, Gandhi has been represented in biopics of other
leaders like Shri Babasaheb Ambedkar, Iron Man Sardar Patel, Shaheed Bhagat
Singh etc. Hollywood had made another movie called ‘Nine Hours To Rama’ in 1962
where Gandhi’s assassination was re-imagined and Godse was presented as hero.
The Mark Robson directed film never released in India and tanked globally. It
had no Indian actors.
Gandhi’s Under-Representation In Indian Cinema
Mahatma is under-represented in Indian film industry. The best work on
Gandhi is by a non-Indian – Maybe an outsider had more courage and better
perspective to make a film on Gandhi. The greatest film makers of our time in
1940s to 1980s never thought of making a movie on Gandhi. They must have
thought – Gandhi is so much within us that we never need a movie for him.
Gandhi is a family member of every Indian. What is there to tell about Gandhi
that people do not know? The movie may not make money!
Dada Saheb Phalke, Bimal Roy, V Shantaram, Himanshu Rai, Chandulal Shah, Mehboob Khan, Raj Kapoor, Chetan Anand, Satyajit Ray, Hrishikesh Mukherjee – None of them made a movie on Gandhi. The movies till 1950s and 1960s had a lot of influence of Gandhian values but there was no Gandhi movie. The erosion of patriotic feeling, the rise of corruption, the arrival of angry young man, the liberalisation of economy, the excitement of millennium – different phases of a growing India. And all this while Gandhi remained in background in the cinematic world.
There were occasional trace of Gandhi. In Bimal Roy’s Nutan starrer Sujata,
the main protagonist avoids suicide after becoming aware of Gandhi’s views on
suicide and changes her life. Salim Khan Saheb had once commented that the
pivoted character of movie ‘Imaan Dharam’ was inspired by Gandhiji. The
protagonist of his movie ‘Kabza’ was also Gandhi. Ashutosh Gowariker’s movie
Swades was influenced by Gandhian principles – Shah Rukh Khan is called Mohan
in the movie. The interesting thing to note is that the movies on Gandhi and
his philosophy are limited and lacking depth.
Charlie Chaplin and Gandhi
Interestingly, Charlie Chaplin was inspired by Gandhi and one can notice the influence in his film ‘Modern Times’. Charlie Chaplin had met Mahatma Gandhi in at a nondescript building at London’s East India Dock Road in 1931. The two had discussions on lot of topic including machinery, socio-economic conditions, philosophy of principles driving Indian Independence struggle etc. Charlie Chaplin’s memoir describe how he was transfixed to see Gandhi offer the evening prayers – a super intelligent being immersed in spiritual devotion! (An interesting point to note is the biopics of both Gandhi and Charlie Chaplin were made by one person – Sir Richard Attenborough.)
How would modern directors interpret Gandhi? We have had Love Stories and
Lust Stories. How about ‘Gandhi Stories’ by Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap,
Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Karan Johar? Or if Hollywood presented Gandhi through
the eyes of Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan or James Cameron? Just imagine!
