  • Dhirubahen Patel @ 100

    Dhirubahen Patel @ 100

    Some lives are lived.

    Some lives are experienced.

And then there are rare lives like Dhirubahen Patel’s — that are celebrated across generations.

As we approach her centennial year (May 25), an unforgettable evening in Ahmedabad — “સ્મરણો ના સથવારે” (With the Help of Memories) — brought together friends, admirers, and stalwarts of Gujarati literature to celebrate her extraordinary journey. The event was organised by her Bombay friends and fans.

A Special Evening Where Her Words Came Alive
Through performances and readings, her creations once again breathed life on stage:
    – Anderi Ganderi Tipari Ten — brought alive by Shri Utkarsh Mazumdar
    – Harishnu Honeymoon — performed by Dr. Preeti Jariwala

    – Ichchavar — a radio play by Sushri Vaishali Trivedi

-Short story by Shri Deepak Mehta & Dr. Khevna Desai
-A powerful Bhavni Bhavai rendition by Dr Khevna Desai & Shri Utkarsh Mazumdar
    – Soulful Saraswati Vandana by Sushri Nandita Thakore

With Shri Kumarpal Desai welcoming the gathering and Sushri Mitra Patel offering the vote of thanks, the evening was not just a tribute—it was a collective remembrance of a life that touched everyone present. Every person in that packed hall had a story with her.
And somehow… she had a story with each one of them.

    More Than a Literary Icon
Dhirubahen was not just a writer. She was:
    • A creator across every literary form — fiction, plays, films, poetry, translation, children’s literature
    • A custodian of Gujarati language
    • A guiding force behind landmark initiatives like GujaratiLexicon and Digital Bhagwadgomandal
    • And above all, a matriarch who nurtured people, purpose, and possibilities

As beautifully captured in my journey with her — she wasn’t just a mentor, she was a living institution of wisdom, warmth, and unwavering belief.

    My Personal Pilgrimage with Her

As I sat there, listening to her words echo again, I found myself revisiting my own journey…
From Hansraj Wadi (Bombay) meetings to the GujaratiLexicon launch,

From Bhagwadgomandal digitization to countless conversations over chai…
From Gokul ice creams to priceless interactions at Ahmedabad

She was always there — guiding, encouraging, reassuring.
Her simple words still echo in my mind:
“Thai jashe… It will happen.”

And somehow, with her blessings — it always did.
She shaped not just projects, but people.
Not just outcomes, but belief.

Her wisdom, her maternal affection, her unwavering faith — have left an imprint on my life that words can never fully capture.

I am certain that somewhere, she and Rati Kaka are already planning the next big project for Gujarati language — perhaps from a universe richer than ours, powered by the same unstoppable love that defined them both here.

    The Legacy Continues

For those who missed this beautiful evening — there is another opportunity to celebrate her life:
Gujarati Literary Academy UK Celebrates the Life & Work of Dhirubahen Patel
    April 4, 2026
    Online

The celebration continues — this time, for Gujaratis across the world.
A fitting continuation of a journey that refuses to end — because her work, her spirit, and her impact continue to live on… through all of us.

    In Gratitude
Dhirubahen Patel was not just a literary legend.

She was a force of culture, a guardian of language, and a beacon of humanity.
“A life lived thoroughly. A life to celebrate. A spiritual soul whose light lives on in every Gujarati word ever written, spoken, and loved.”

    And for me…

She will always remain a mentor, a guide, a friend, a Godmother and a spiritual saint

    Forever grateful.
    Forever blessed.

Sushri Dhirubahan Patel: A Divine Soul!

Sushri Dhirubahen Patel : A compassionate soul who spread love, warmth, positivity and sunshine.

A literary legend, film writer, play writer, a Gandhian, translator, Gujaratilexicon and Bhagwadgomandal’s inspirational advisor, Gujarati Sahitya Parishad president, Gujarat Vishwakosh Trust’s key figure – she had many identities and she excelled in her role. Ketan Mehta’s famous Bhavni Bhavai was based on her book. She has created a rich body of Gujarati work and won several awards including Sahitya Academy Award. Dhirubahen Patel’s demise is a big loss for the Gujarat and Gujarati world.

I was one of the lucky ones to be blessed by her divine company. Gujaratilexicon was instrumental in our introductions in Bombay and we worked on several projects. Her energy, her drive and her commitment to ensure a successful outcome for our projects was inspirational. Dhirubahen launched our landmark project Gujaratilexicon with her blessings in Jan 2006. The next work Digital Bhagwadogmandal was executed in a record 11 months and Dhirubahen launched it in Jan 2009. I fondly remember the interactions in Bombay, at her Santacruz home and trips to Rati Kaka’s house and our home.

Over the years, we developed a strong bond and I and Komal were amazed by her briliance as well as simplicty. We relished her stories and anecdotes from her rich life – her interaction with Mahatma Gandhi, interesting events, interactions with film directors. Her wise counsel, warm interactions, maternal affection and pure unlimited love is something that I will miss forever. Komal and Dhirubahen spent a lot of time together recently and we cherish these moments.

My final interaction with her was equally enlightening, She asked us to avoid serious talks. We agreed for quick QnA.

    Gujaratilexicon – The Movement’s 15th Year!

Gujaratilexicon – The World’s Biggest Online Gujarati Language Resource – Enters 15th Year!

What started as a small idea to make a difference to Gujarati language, has evolved into a language movement! The world of Gujarati language and technology has evolved in the last fifteen years – from initial fonts, typing tools, dictionary and simple websites to presence of Gujarati content in all forms and on all devices.

Since its launch in 2006, Gujaratilexicon has grown into the default portal of Gujarati language lovers with more than 4 crore visitors and growing! The original Gujaratilexicon has been enriched with many shining projects like Digital Bhagwadogmandal, Sarth, Lok Kosh, Games, Mobile Apps, Oxford Collaboration etc. Team Gujaratilexicon has made a difference to several other Gujarati language initiatives and digital projects.

I still remember the day when I met Gujaratilexicon founder Shri Ratilal Chandaria – almost 16 years ago! The project has indeed seen all my major life milestones. It has introduced me to wonderful people like Shri Vipool Kalyani, Shri Uttam Gajjar, Shri Dhirubahen Patel, Shri Mansukh Shah, Shri Balvant Patel, Who’s Who of Gujarati World, Team Members of Gujaratilexicon and many friends for life!

The Jan 13 day is a special day and Team Gujaratilexicon Web reiterates ourselves to the original vision and mission.

Oxford – Gujaratilexicon Collaborate For Digital Experience In Local Language

Gujaratilexicon is pleased to announce the launch of the Gujarati Living Dictionary as part of the Oxford Global Languages (OGL) initiative.

The OGL programme is building dictionaries and lexical resources for around 100 of the world’s languages and making them available online. The Gujarati Living Dictionary is launched as a part of a special focus on Indian languages.

Explore the Gujarati Living Dictionary at: https://gu.oxforddictionaries.com/

Judy Pearsall, Director for Oxford Dictionaries put forward the motivating philosophy in her own words: “Digital communication across the globe is dominated by English and other major global languages. We are at a critical time in the nexus of the internet and its impact on language diversity and viability, and the time to act is now. OGL is a mission to help digital communication through building resources for the world’s languages. India has a remarkable linguistic landscape with a richness and history that is found in few other places on the planet. But only 35 percent of the Indian population use the internet. Hence we are putting a special focus on Indian languages and aim to work for more initiatives in this space.”

Gujaratlexicon is the thought leader in Gujarati language space and aims to preserve, popularize and develop Gujarati language through the power of information technology.

Dr. Ashok Karania, Mentor of Gujaratilexicon is enthused about the collaboration between Oxford and Gujaratilexicon. He says: “We are humbled to be a part of the global initiative of Oxford to transform digital experience for the non-English world by providing content and tools in local languages. Gujarati is the language of the enterprising people across the world and this initiative will inspire further technology, research and education programs for diasporic and local Indians. As digital era and AI transform the technology world, the personal human experience will be more important than ever and technologies in local language will ensure those expressions”

    About OGL:

Oxford Global Languages (OGL) is a major initiative from Oxford Dictionaries, part of Oxford Univeristy Press, which launched in 2014. OGL aims to transform the experience of millions of people worldwide by making their language available in digital form – on websites, in apps, and via other tools.

OGL records how living languages, including their variants and dialects, are used today. The result is a vast data store of language data that is accessible, linked, and reusable. https://www.oxforddictionaries.com/ogl/

  • GujaratiLexicon’s 10 Glorious Years – Thank You!

    GujaratiLexicon’s 10 Glorious Years – Thank You!

Jan 13, 2016 Marks The Ten Years of GujaratiLexicon !

What A Defining Decade It Has Been !

A decade is an important milestone in the journey of an organisation and a movement. It is easy to start on an idea but difficult to sustain. It is even more difficult to prosper and continue to make a difference with the same passion as the original vision. Thankfully Gujaratilexicon movement has grown from strength to strength. From the first font by Shri Madhu Rye to GL Mobile Apps, Shri Ratilal Chandaria and GL movement have continued to bring world-class technology to the gujarati world. The GL Vision has been vindicated with the hundreds of websites, apps, blogs & gujarati technological resources. GL itself has continued innovation with Digital Bhagwadgomandal, Sarth App, GL Games for children, Learning Gujarati project, Lokkosh, GujaratiLexicon Mobile Apps, Swahili Lexicon, Chinese & Japanese dictionaries etc. The journey continues….Lots of work is still to be done….The creation of new standards, new fonts, digitisation of massive Gujarati content, online platform for Gujarati journals, Audio-books etc.

But today, we wanted to take a pause and thank our community, people and organisations. GujaratiLexicon movement would not be a success as it is today without the active support of the GL user. GL users have been our fans and our ambassadors. The GL user has been the centre point of our endeavours and we are elated by your love, GL usage, feedback, ideas, bricks and bouquets. We continue to aspire to serve to each and every person who wants to use Gujarati Language. Whether you want to find word that is in your mind or confirm the meaning or correct a sentence or play a game or teach Gujarati to your children – GL is there – on Internet or on Mobile.

The GujaratiLexicon Movement is indebted to Shri R P Chandaria and his love of Gujarati Language. When our founder and inspiration, started his journey of GL work, the world was a different place. Internet was not accessible to all and he worked on fonts, keyboard and dictionaries. We worked with organisations across continents. After 20 years of efforts, Jan 13,  2006 marked the online arrival of GujaratiLexicon and it helped the overall Gujarati writing movement. Today smartphones are redefining the world and GujaratiLexicon is ready for the new era.

GujaratiLexicon movement has been helped by our GL Advisory Board and Trustees Shri Uttam Gajjar, Shri Balvant Patel, Shri Mansukh Shah and Shri Vipool Kalyani – Each one is an stalwart in his field and have nurtured GL with the same love and passion as Shri R P Chandaria. Sushri Dhirubahen Patel has been a guiding light for us all across the journey. We are indebted to them. We also have loved the support from Chandaria Family Members, Shri Kumarpal Desai and Ajay Sanghavi.

Finally, GL Movement would not be possible without the love and dedication and work of GL Team. We have been blessed to be helped by selfless and inspiring team members across the years. I can write stories on each one of them and their passion for GL. Thanks to the wonderful members and volunteers.

  • Google Translate For Gujarati

    Google Translate For Gujarati

Google has extended its translation services to Gujarati language. Recently, Google added five more Indian languages – Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu – besides Hindi potentially increasing its reach to over 500 million people.

    Google Translate

Research Scientist Ashish Venugopal has written the following note on The Official Google Post:

Beginning today, you can explore the linguistic diversity of the Indian sub-continent with Google Translate, which now supports five new experimental alpha languages: Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu. In India and Bangladesh alone, more than 500 million people speak these five languages. Since 2009, we’ve launched a total of 11 alpha languages, bringing the current number of languages supported by Google Translate to 63.

Indic languages differ from English in many ways, presenting several exciting challenges when developing their respective translation systems. Indian languages often use the Subject Object Verb (SOV) ordering to form sentences, unlike English, which uses Subject Verb Object (SVO) ordering. This difference in sentence structure makes it harder to produce fluent translations; the more words that need to be reordered, the more chance there is to make mistakes when moving them. Tamil, Telugu and Kannada are also highly agglutinative, meaning a single word often includes affixes that represent additional meaning, like tense or number. Fortunately, our research to improve Japanese (an SOV language) translation helped us with the word order challenge, while our work translating languages like German, Turkish and Russian provided insight into the agglutination problem.

You can expect translations for these new alpha languages to be less fluent and include many more untranslated words than some of our more mature languages—like Spanish or Chinese—which have much more of the web content that powers our statistical machine translation approach. Despite these challenges, we release alpha languages when we believe that they help people better access the multilingual web. If you notice incorrect or missing translations for any of our languages, please correct us; we enjoy learning from our mistakes and your feedback helps us graduate new languages from alpha status. If you’re a translator, you’ll also be able to take advantage of our machine translated output when using the Google Translator Toolkit.

Since these languages each have their own unique scripts, we’ve enabled a transliterated input method for those of you without Indian language keyboards. For example, if you type in the word “nandri,” it will generate the Tamil word நன்றி (see what it means). To see all these beautiful scripts in action, you’ll need to install fonts* for each language.

We hope that the launch of these new alpha languages will help you better understand the Indic web and encourage the publication of new content in Indic languages, taking us five alpha steps closer to a web without language barriers.
