My doctoral research began with a simple question:\n    <\/p>\n\n    <blockquote style=\"border-left:4px solid #222; padding-left:18px; margin:24px 0; font-size:20px; font-style:italic;\">\n      What happens when one of the world\u2019s largest creative industries embraces modern management?\n    <\/blockquote>\n\n    <p>\n      That question led to my doctoral thesis at the University of Mumbai, titled <strong>\u201cApplication of Modern Management to Indian Film Industry with Special Reference to Mumbai.\u201d<\/strong> Completed during the centenary year of Indian cinema, it remains among the early business research studies to examine the industry\u2019s transformation through the lens of management.\n    <\/p>\n  <\/div>\n\n  <aside class=\"research-stats\" style=\"flex:1 1 300px; background:#f7f5f0; padding:28px; border-radius:16px;\">\n    <h3 style=\"margin-top:0; margin-bottom:20px; font-size:22px;\">\n      Research Snapshot\n    <\/h3>\n\n    <p><strong>University of Mumbai<\/strong><br>Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)<\/p>\n\n    <p><strong>Research Theme<\/strong><br>Business &amp; Indian Cinema<\/p>\n\n    <p><strong>Completed<\/strong><br>2013 \u2014 Centenary Year of Indian Cinema<\/p>\n\n    <p style=\"margin-bottom:0;\">\n      <strong>Focus<\/strong><br>\n      Strategy \u2022 Finance \u2022 Marketing \u2022 Production \u2022 Distribution \u2022 Exhibition\n    <\/p>\n  <\/aside>\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"research-body\" style=\"max-width:900px;\">\n\n  <h2>The Research<\/h2>\n\n  <p>\n    Drawing on extensive interactions with producers and film industry professionals in Mumbai, the research explored how corporatization and professional management were reshaping the Indian film industry.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Its central argument was simple:\n  <\/p>\n\n  <blockquote style=\"border-left:4px solid #222; padding-left:18px; margin:24px 0; font-size:20px; font-style:italic;\">\n    Professional management isn\u2019t just compatible with creative filmmaking \u2014 it is the catalyst that unlocks scale, sustainability, and long-term success.\n  <\/blockquote>\n\n  <p>\n    The research demonstrated how modern management practices helped the industry:\n  <\/p>\n\n  <ul>\n    <li>Scale production more efficiently<\/li>\n    <li>Integrate the filmmaking value chain from script to screen<\/li>\n    <li>Diversify financial and operational risk<\/li>\n    <li>Strengthen strategic planning and decision-making<\/li>\n    <li>Professionalize marketing, finance, production, distribution, and exhibition<\/li>\n  <\/ul>\n\n  <p>\n    While the research focused on cinema, the broader lesson was universal: creativity flourishes when supported by thoughtful management, not constrained by it.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    The research reinforced a belief I continue to hold today: sustainable transformation happens when creativity is strengthened by thoughtful management, disciplined execution, and a willingness to embrace change.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <h2>A Memorable Milestone<\/h2>\n\n  <p>\n    The graphical edition of the thesis was released on <strong>1 October 2013<\/strong> by <strong>Shri R. P. Chandaria<\/strong> \u2014 industrialist, philanthropist, and one of the guiding inspirations behind the GujaratiLexicon movement.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    It remains one of the most cherished milestones of my academic journey and was, poignantly, among Shri Chandaria\u2019s final public releases.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    The occasion was also graced by <strong>Shri Uttam Gajjar<\/strong>, <strong>Shri Vimal Chandaria<\/strong>, and <strong>Shri Rashmi Chandaria<\/strong>, making it a memorable celebration of scholarship, cinema, and lifelong learning.\n  <\/p>\n\n<section class=\"research-image\" style=\"margin-bottom:40px;\">\n  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ashok-karania-wordpress.staging9.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Doctoral-Research-Page-Image.png\" alt=\"Doctoral thesis graphical edition release event\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border-radius:16px;\">\n<\/section>\n\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Cinema Meets the Boardroom Exploring how modern management transformed one of the world\u2019s largest creative industries.
