Billions of dollars are flowing into data centers, models, platforms, and startups. Global leaders are calling this <strong>India\u2019s AI moment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But during my recent session on <strong>AI for Inclusion and Governance<\/strong>, one question stood above all others:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How do we ensure India\u2019s AI future works not just for markets \u2014 but for every Indian?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Purpose-Driven AI Vision for Viksit Bharat<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">India\u2019s aspiration to become a <em>Viksit Bharat by 2047<\/em> cannot be measured only by GDP or global rankings. It must be measured by <strong>citizen health, opportunity, dignity, and the ability of every Indian to achieve their full potential<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI, if designed and governed well, can be one of the strongest enablers of this vision. But inclusion will not happen by default. It must be <strong>intentional, ethical, and measurable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inclusion Begins with Language and Voice<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One fact defines India\u2019s AI challenge:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>85% of Indians are non-English speaking<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India has <strong>22 official languages and nearly 20,000 dialects<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If AI remains English-first and text-heavy, it will exclude before it empowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why India must prioritize <strong>voice-based, multilingual AI<\/strong> \u2014 systems that work on basic smartphones and understand how Indians <em>speak<\/em>, not just how they type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early examples of <strong>voice-based agents<\/strong> in education, healthcare, and citizen services already show how powerful this can be for first-time digital users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>For India, voice is not a feature. It is the interface.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gender Inclusion: Making the Invisible Visible<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In India, inclusion and gender are inseparable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Women power frontline systems \u2014 <strong>teachers, nurses, ASHAs, anganwadi workers<\/strong> \u2014 and form the backbone of SHGs and informal enterprises. Yet they are often excluded from digital and financial systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One stark example: <strong>Women entrepreneurs are frequently rejected twice for credit<\/strong> \u2014 once by informal systems, and again by formal ones \u2014 not because they are risky, but because they are <em>invisible<\/em> to traditional credit models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where AI can become a force for inclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By analysing <strong>UPI transaction patterns, ONDC order histories, savings discipline, and cash-flow consistency<\/strong>, AI can build <strong>fair, behaviour-based credit scores<\/strong> that reflect real economic activity \u2014 even when formal credit history is absent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An equally great idea is <strong>\u201cAI Saheli\u201d <\/strong>\u2014 a trusted, vernacular AI companion that helps women navigate finance, health, entitlements, and entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If rural women can confidently engage with AI, <strong>India\u2019s inclusion challenge fundamentally shifts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Innovation for India: MSMEs, DPI, and Ecosystem Collaboration<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">India\u2019s growth engine lies not only in large enterprises, but in <strong>63 million MSMEs<\/strong>, most of them informal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI can empower MSMEs by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Automating bookkeeping and compliance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enabling market access via ONDC<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Providing multilingual copilots for pricing, sales, and customer engagement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crucially, India does not need to reinvent infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We already have world-class <strong>Digital Public Infrastructure<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Aadhaar<\/strong> for identity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>UPI<\/strong> for payments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ONDC<\/strong> for commerce<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI layered on top of these rails can democratize sophisticated capabilities for even the smallest businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is also where <strong>global technology platforms<\/strong> like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/microsoft\/\">Microsoft<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/google\/\">Google<\/a> play an important \u2014 but enabling \u2014 role. Not as owners of India\u2019s AI future, but as <strong>ecosystem partners<\/strong> providing foundational models, secure compute, safety tooling, and skilling \u2014 while Indian startups, academia, and public institutions build context-rich, last-mile solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>India\u2019s AI future must be built in India \u2014 enabled by global platforms, governed by public institutions, and guided by public purpose.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Healthcare: The Highest-Impact Frontier<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">India faces some of the world\u2019s largest burdens of <strong>diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and late-stage diagnosis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI offers a chance to leapfrog:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Early screening and diagnostics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clinical decision support<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drug and vaccine discovery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Population health analytics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When combined with <strong>PHCs, Ayushman Bharat, and ABDM<\/strong>, AI can shift India from reactive care to <strong>predictive and preventive healthcare at scale<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where <em>AI for Good<\/em> becomes AI that <strong>saves lives<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mistakes India Must Avoid<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two risks demand constant vigilance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>AI as surveillance, not empowerment<\/strong> Trust is foundational. AI must strengthen democracy, not undermine it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AI that represents only a narrow slice of India<\/strong> Models must be diverse, decisions explainable, and systems auditable \u2014 especially in welfare and governance.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI should assist judgment, not replace accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Frontier Nation Vision: Every Indian with a Co-Pilot<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The future to aim for is simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A woman in rural India confidently speaking to an AI assistant in her language. A farmer receiving climate and crop advice by voice. An MSME owner running a business with an AI copilot. A nurse or teacher supported \u2014 not burdened \u2014 by AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Every Indian with a trusted co-pilot.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is what <em>Viksit Bharat 2047<\/em> as a <strong>Frontier Nation<\/strong> truly means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Closing Thought<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">India has built world-class digital rails. Now we must ensure the AI running on them is <strong>inclusive by design, governed with care, and aligned with national purpose<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because India\u2019s AI success will not be measured by the size of our models \u2014 but by the <strong>lives we uplift<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AI for Good. AI for Inclusion.
