Book Review – The Difficulty Of Being Good

Gurcharan Das is one of the favorite Indian writers. I loved his India Unbound and I follow his columns as well. I read his book ‘The Difficulty Of Being Good’ this week.

‘The Difficulty Of Being Good’ explores the subtle art of Dharma. The book revisits the story of Mahabharata and presents it from the perspective of different traits of its characters. Envy, Courage, Revenge, Dharma, Remorse etc. are explored. The author also adds recents anecdotes of Satyam, Reliance and other events to give it a contemporary linkage.

The central theme is discussions around Dharma. Draupadi questions Yudhistir on what did he achieve after following Dharma? He got only grief and pain. She asks – Why be good? Yudhistira says – I act because I must. That is the central definition. Right Action itself is the reward.

Mahabharat concludes that wealth and pleasure follow Dharma yet Dharma is not pursued. Dharma means praying for well-being of others. Through thoughts, actions and speech, if we can do good for others, it is Dharma.

The common problem is that we would feel bad if we act according to Dharma and yet the other one is unjust. Or worse our opponent / rival, exploit our goodness. The response is again the same – Following Dharma itself is a reward. Of course, one should try to be smart. Mahabharata does not following Gandhian principle of offering the other cheek. (The book says that Gandhi succeeded because the opponent was Britain. British are rational and logical and workable. But it we had toxic terrorist regimes as opponents, Gandhi may not have succeeded. Who knows?)

Dharma in everyday life is doing one’s best. Living life with compassion and equanimity is vital. One could live life like a twig of tree and respond to the currents of life water appropriately.

    The other interesting points are:
    1. Mahabharat is ‘A series of precisely stated problems imprecisely resolved’ !
    2. Time cooks us all. (Remember the opening of B R Chopra’s Mahabharat – Main Samay Hoon). Time cooks beings. Why would the war happen otherwise?
    3. Mahabharata is a story of deception. Deception happens on both side. It might have been difficult for Pandavas to emerge victorious without breaking many rules. Killing of Drona, Karna and gunning down Bhishama were not according to the war rules. Krishna would term as strategic moves.
    4. It is not easy to classify Kauravas and Pandavas as bad and good. The better word would be to state that Pandavas are the preferred side.
    5. The claim of Pandavas to throne was never a clean one due to ambiguity of lineage. Strictly speaking, King Pandu had no sons.
    6. Kauravas had deep envy of Pandvas. Author gives example of Ambani brothers. Envy kills !
    7. Disrobing of Draupadi had many questions. How could a king who has lost himself wager his wife?
    8. Action always beats inaction. Action is fruit in itself.
    9. Yudhistira cursed that women will not be able to keep the secrets – that is where it started 🙂
He was not happy that his mother did not tell him about Karna.
    10. Yudhistira has once to choose to save only his one brother from four brothers who are dead. He choses Nakula so that each of his two mothers have only surviving son. His sense of justice is exemplary.

I found it is as a different and interesting read. It reinforces the belief in doing our best and not worrying about results. It tells about pursuing the right path of Dharma. Krishna tells that it does not matter if you bend the rules for the righteous victory – I do not agree to this though ! The path is sometimes as important as the goal. Difficult in today’s times !

Though I believe Bhagwad Gita is the best management book. The central theme is Action ! Read my Bhagwad Gita review.

‘The Difficulty Of Being Good’ is worth reading for sure !

  • Soylent : The Future Of Food?

Everyone has pet ideas and interesting concepts that are pure fun, very energizing and often seemingly impossible. I have my list. One of the ideas in the list was Annapurna Tablets. The idea was simple. Body needs food. Food takes lot of time. I really hate time spent on lunch. Even dinner – if I am busy. Many of my friends and colleagues visit home for lunch – waste of time, fuel and break from thinking. My mother or wife have to worry about the menu for the lunch – especially difficult for a person like me. Why not have a tablet that gives you all the necessary ingredients of the daily food? Going beyond the normal supplement pills ! Imagine a pill for dal, chawal, roti, subzi etc. It helps in many time. Saving precious time for you and your environment. In a country like India, it will release the time from housewives – as this becomes their major chore. They can invest in other productive areas including their passions, kids or helping family business.

The joy of food increases. You really cherish those lunches and dinners of full food. You really spend time with friends and colleagues and spouse when you go out for lunch or dinner.

Of course my parents always warned me. But this will not allow the natural growth of your body. Many body parts exists such to help us digest food. Including teeth ! I agreed to some points.

Annapurna Tablets was a thing I never thought would happen. Mine was just wishful thinking and part of my friend conclaves. I am sure that there are lot of people thinking on same lines. I was overjoyed and extremely excited when I saw the concept of Soylent. It addresses the very same issue.

Soylent is an efficient form of fuel for humanity for the first time in history. Soylent is an affordable nutrition drink with all the essential ingredients the healthy body needs. It is an substance that is intended to replace food – just mix the powder with water and drink.

The name Soylent is inspired from the 1973 movie Soylent Green

What Soylent consists of ? Read It Here

Soylent seems like the future of food. Cut the emotion out of food. Do not worry about what to eat. Just eat Soylent which addresses the needs of your body. Have the same thing. It is time efficient. Saves money as well. Steve Jobs did not worry about what to wear – saves decision making and one less thing to worry !

And when you really want to enjoy food – do that. The same food may test better !

Of course Soylent may be very controversial as well. I am sure enough research has been done on it and its effect. It is ready for delivery in US from early 2014. It will soon open for international orders.

Maudene Nelson, a dietician at Columbia University’s Institute of Human Nutrition. “Nutritionally I don’t think you can make a food that delivers everything,” she says. “This is an obsessive way of making food choices. It’s not obsessively overeating. It’s obsessively micromanaging.”

The dream of replacing food has been around for hundreds of years, popular with science fiction writers and utopian communities, says Amy Bentley, an associate professor of food studies at New York University. “In the 19th century, Victorians talked about the meal in a pill,” she says. While the idea may appeal to a small group of people who find eating to be a chore, she says, “for better and worse, most people find food pleasurable.”

Soylent is a revolutionary concept. It is a major mindset shift for mankind. Can it solve the world’s hunger problem? Or it will be just a Silicon Valley techie’s time-saving tool only? Let us see !

  • Life Is Beautiful – Cherish It With Safety

Life Is Beautiful – Cherish It With Safety

Accidents bring lot of dreams and aspirations to a crash. Often with blood and tears. The pointer of guilt is a secondary factor as the biggest damage is already done.

Though destiny cannot be changed, we can change our habits to reduce the damage:

    1. Helmets – Helmets can reduce the extent of damage. All people on two-wheelers need to wear it. It is not cool to not wear the helmets – though many think it otherwise.
    2. Mobiles – Mobiles have changed us as human beings. Conversations can distract us from the road situation and blind us to impending disasters. I amazed to see young men and women speaking on mobile with and without hands-free. People fix mobile phone in the helmet and talk. Women drive Activa with a single hand. Please avoid it.
    3. Speed – Speed Thrills. Speed Kills. Let us get our highs and adrenaline rushes from our achievements, great work. Life is not a Xbox game.
    4. Traffic Rules – Traffic rules exist for a reason. We need to be aware and obey the basic traffic rules. Ahmedabad is notorious for the lack of traffic sense. Why? Let us be the change. Let us not break traffic rules. Let us avoid the temptation of going in the wrong side. Let us avoid the temptation of jumping the light.

Let us always remember that someone is waiting for us at home. Loved ones and their entire world depends on you. Many times, parents have cut their stomaches, sacrificed dreams and given up luxuries to educate us and see us go ahead in life. Let us value that.

  • Subroto Bagchi On Re-Inventing Oneself !

Subroto Bagchi On Re-Inventing Oneself !

Subroto Bagchi – One of the most wonderful and humble persons you will ever meet ! I had the good fortune of meeting this amazing human being and brilliant mind today.

Subroto is one of the highly popular and engaging authors. His books connect with us due to the sheer honesty and genuineness. I have read all his books and I am his ardent fan. Hence I grabbed the opportunity to meet him today when CII organized the round-table discussion with him. I and few other IT Professionals met him at EDI, Gandhinagar today.

Utpal asked Subroto about the different roles described in his book. Subroto explained the different roles as under:
    1. Rainmaker – Every organization needs these people – people who can get business. Every sales person should be a rainmaker.
    2. Thought Leader – People who can see ‘Day After Tomorrow’. People who are visionaries and connect dots which do not exist !
    3. Ninjas – People who can get flawless execution done without process violation within the time and budget constraints.
    4. Coach – People who can train and mentor people.

Every organization needs a good mix of these roles to succeed. Organizations cannot be just Ninjas alone or Rainmaker alone.

He urged everyone of us to get a formal assessment done and understand where we stand. What is our dominant profile. And dominant profile is like our DNA – it cannot be fundamentally changed. Formal assessment will lead us to our growth – sometimes we think we are Leopards though we might be actually a Jackal !

    Subroto_Bagchi_2

I (Ash) requested Subroto to share how we transformed himself and grew himself in MindTree’s journey from ‘Idea To IPO’. Subroto explained that he thought there were four key pillars:

    1. Humility : Humility is very essential. We need to be receptive. Actually, CEO has to be like beggar !
    2. Unusual Sources : Seek information and ideas from unusual sources. Cultivate white space time – it is very important. Important ideas do not need to happen in board rooms – they might happen in bath-tubs. And when bathtub ideas happen, do not wait for market validation or excel forecast – trust your intuition !
    3. Mental Agility : Practice mental agility. Mind needs to be agile and challenge itself. Sometimes mental agility happens with displacement – change of city etc.
    4. Sense of Purpose : The most important factor ! The purpose determines your power in life. The practical examples of Intel, Microsoft and Dalai Lama drove home this point effectively.

Very beautiful insights – worth internalizing in life !

Subroto also explained that entrepreneurs need to create more leaders – leaders who can see the big picture and who can have critical questioning ability. Entrepreneurs fail when they always surround people who think like them and are sycophants.

    Subroto recommended the following resources:
    1. Book: A Whole New Mind – Why Right-brainers Will Rule the Future is a book by Daniel H. Pink
    2. Movie Documentary : Infinite Vision
    3. Book: Leading with Questions – How Leaders Find the Right Solutions By Knowing What To Ask

Apart from the amazing experience, my reward was to get his personally autographed book ! Happy !!!

  • Dravid’s Wisdom

    Dravid’s Wisdom

Rahul Dravid is an leader who walks the talk. He is a leader who is grounded, humble, sincere, achiever and team-player. He has taken a stand on the current cricket controversy – he speaks his mind and he is fearless. We know many ex-cricketers who just sit back and enjoy perks from BCCI. He has chosen to show the mirror. Great Act !

Here is a Quick Edit which appeared on Mint. Worth repeating !

Rahul Dravid has always been a class act, both on the field and off it. It is thus good to see him remind cricket administrators, in an interview, that the success of the game rides on the loyalty of the fans. He had made a similar point in his wonderful Sir Donald Bradman Oration in 2011.

Indian cricket is facing a credibility crisis, with administrative turf wars, betting controversies and conflicts of interest. The situation was similar in the mid-1990s. Dravid was one of a generation of cricketers who not only came together in a formidable combination on field, but also brought credibility to the game with their exemplary behaviour. The others were Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly, V.V.S. Laxman and Anil Kumble.

Dravid makes a point that has far broader relevance: Politicians owe their jobs to voters, CEOs to shareholders, bureaucrats to citizens, journalists to readers.

  • Bhaag Milkha Bhaag – Worth A Watch !

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag – Worth A Watch !

Rakesh Om Prakash Mehra’s Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is a dramatic Bollywood experience with moments of magic. It is an inspirational tale of the Flying Sikh Milkha Singh. Farhan Akhar has given a towering performance in a career best role.

Everyone knows that the movie is the story of a popular athlete and hence there are set expectations. The challenge is to present a large than life aura of the star yet remain authentic. Rakesh Mehra’s partially succeeds in achieving the difficult balance but he could have done better for sure. The film’s length of 3 hours plus clearly expresses his struggle.

The film is the journey of Mlikha Singh as he conquers the world. His unhealed wounds of partition, his growing up years, his incomplete love story, his rise as an athlete, his brief flirtation and his pursuit of world record is beautifully captured. Milkha’s early years represent the idyllic life in beautiful village in the pre-partition days. The move to India is painful but he adapts to the environment and grows into a lawless mischief. His relationship with sister is touching. The entry of love in his life inspires him to become responsible and amend his life. The salvation is in an army job where the glass of milk incentivizes him for a running career. His talent leads him to the glories inspite of the petty jealousies, setbacks and brief deviations. Milkha runs with fresh wounds after an attack by competitor and breaks the national record. He breaks the 400 m world record with his sheer persistence and passion. The movie ends with a typical India and Pakistan competition.

There are two heroes of the movie: Prasoon Joshi and Farhan Akhtar. Prasoon’s lyrics are pure magic. The songs really touch your heart. He seems to be a worthy successor to Gulzar style of poetry. He has even written the story, screenplay and dialogues for the movie. Farhan Akhtar plays the character with pure conviction and his hard work clearly shows. He has not only build his muscles but only reconstructed himself with the movie. He is going to busy in the awards season. Divya Dutta is brilliant as always and Rebecca Breeds is charming. Sonam has nothing to do in the movie. Pawan Malhotra, Prakash Raj, Yograj Singh, K K Raina are all brilliant in supporting the main cast.

    BMB_1

Inspite of its flaws, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is a good movie. The movie is a lesson in pursuit of excellence. If the movie even inspires a few Indians to take sports seriously and live life with determination and will power, it will have ensured its place in the history.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag – A Good Watch !

  • Warren Buffet’s The Philanthropic Pledge

    Warren Buffet’s The Philanthropic Pledge

Warren Buffet is an inspirational hero to one and many ! He has been a legend in the investing world but his philanthropic pledge has put him in the same league as Rockerfeller and Tata. Even Bill Gates has changed his legacy !

I am reproducing Warren Buffet’s Philanthropic Pledge – It is worth reading !

“In 2006, I made a commitment to gradually give all of my Berkshire Hathaway stock to philanthropic foundations. I couldn’t be happier with that decision.

Now, Bill and Melinda Gates and I are asking hundreds of rich Americans to pledge at least 50% of their wealth to charity. So I think it is fitting that I reiterate my intentions and explain the thinking that lies behind them.

First, my pledge: More than 99% of my wealth will go to philanthropy during my lifetime or at death. Measured by dollars, this commitment is large. In a comparative sense, though, many individuals give more to others every day.

Millions of people who regularly contribute to churches, schools, and other organizations thereby relinquish the use of funds that would otherwise benefit their own families. The dollars these people drop into a collection plate or give to United Way mean forgone movies, dinners out, or other personal pleasures. In contrast, my family and I will give up nothing we need or want by fulfilling this 99% pledge.

Moreover, this pledge does not leave me contributing the most precious asset, which is time. Many people, including — I’m proud to say — my three children, give extensively of their own time and talents to help others. Gifts of this kind often prove far more valuable than money. A struggling child, befriended and nurtured by a caring mentor, receives a gift whose value far exceeds what can be bestowed by a check. My sister, Doris, extends significant person-to-person help daily. I’ve done little of this.

What I can do, however, is to take a pile of Berkshire Hathaway stock certificates — “claim checks” that when converted to cash can command far-ranging resources — and commit them to benefit others who, through the luck of the draw, have received the short straws in life. To date about 20% of my shares have been distributed (including shares given by my late wife, Susan Buffett). I will continue to annually distribute about 4% of the shares I retain. At the latest, the proceeds from all of my Berkshire shares will be expended for philanthropic purposes by 10 years after my estate is settled. Nothing will go to endowments; I want the money spent on current needs.

This pledge will leave my lifestyle untouched and that of my children as well. They have already received significant sums for their personal use and will receive more in the future. They live comfortable and productive lives. And I will continue to live in a manner that gives me everything that I could possibly want in life.

Some material things make my life more enjoyable; many, however, would not. I like having an expensive private plane, but owning a half-dozen homes would be a burden. Too often, a vast collection of possessions ends up possessing its owner. The asset I most value, aside from health, is interesting, diverse, and long-standing friends.

My wealth has come from a combination of living in America, some lucky genes, and compound interest. Both my children and I won what I call the ovarian lottery. (For starters, the odds against my 1930 birth taking place in the U.S. were at least 30 to 1. My being male and white also removed huge obstacles that a majority of Americans then faced.)

My luck was accentuated by my living in a market system that sometimes produces distorted results, though overall it serves our country well. I’ve worked in an economy that rewards someone who saves the lives of others on a battlefield with a medal, rewards a great teacher with thank-you notes from parents, but rewards those who can detect the mispricing of securities with sums reaching into the billions. In short, fate’s distribution of long straws is wildly capricious.

The reaction of my family and me to our extraordinary good fortune is not guilt, but rather gratitude. Were we to use more than 1% of my claim checks on ourselves, neither our happiness nor our well-being would be enhanced. In contrast, that remaining 99% can have a huge effect on the health and welfare of others. That reality sets an obvious course for me and my family: Keep all we can conceivably need and distribute the rest to society, for its needs. My pledge starts us down that course.”

    Very inspiring indeed !
