  • Kshamapan – Michammi Dukkadam – The Festival Of Forgiveness

Kshamapan – Michammi Dukkadam – The Festival Of Forgiveness

Forgiveness is the supreme act of courage!

It is an act of faith and humility. It releases both the parties to move on and build a new tomorrow. However, it is very difficult to execute. Equally difficult is forgiving oneself!

However, we need to start somewhere!

And nothing better than the holy day of Samvastari – the last day of Paryushan – the biggest Jain Festival. On this day, all Jains ask for forgiveness by saying – Michammi Dukkadam.

    Dear Friend

I ask for forgiveness, if I may have hurt you, intentionally or unintentionally, by Thoughts, Words or Action.

    Micchami Dukkadam !

  • The Golden Age of Technology

    The Golden Age of Technology

Elon Musk is a genius. Recently, he asked American Governors to regulate Artificial Intelligence (AI) before it’s too late. Musk’s position on AI is known but his recent comments again brought the debate of intrusion of technology in our lives? Is the golden age of technology over? No. Musk’s concerns withstanding, we are embarking on a golden age of technology globally.

Technology excites us. Technology frightens us. Technology amazes us. Technology arouses us. Technology challenges us. Technology is all around us. Technology is a part of our daily lives. The continuous improvement and rise of technology has created new possibilities.

We are embarking on a golden age of technology thanks to the combined forces of Smart Devices, Global Connectivity, Cloud Power, Machine Learning & Data Analytics. I called it the DNA of new age of technology – Devices & Data, Networks & Connectivity, Analytics. The DNA is connecting different technology dots and creating disruptive ideas. The disruptive ideas are scaling fast to change business models and influence our digital lives. The impact of technology is real when politicians smart promising faster internet, digital government and smart IOT cities to win votes!

    1. Devices & Data

Devices are smarter, faster, cheaper and loaded with sensors. The devices include micro-buttons and chips. Human body and car can be a device itself. The skin stickers can capture vital body stats. Ingestible sensors can give the real view of what is happening inside your body. Beacons in airports, retails stores, hospitals, warehouses, museums are a reality now.

Data is the new oil. Huge amount of data is being captured on an ongoing basis. Mobile phones, apps, browsers, sensors, fitness devices etc. are some of the avenues through which data is regularly captured. We have collected more data in last two years than in last 20 years.

    2. Networks & Connectivity

The proliferation of connectivity across the world is a big booster to the technology aspirations of mankind. As countries get faster and reliable internet connectivity, it will open traditional vestiges to innovation. The connectivity will boost existing and new businesses and empower citizens. As countries realize that their GDP and connectivity are positively co-related, the investments in connectivity will continue. And it will boost new technologies like drones, robots and autonomous cars.

The widespread availability of internet and internet access has opened the quick collection, transmission and analysis of data. We also have the capability to store huge amount of data in large data warehouses or leverage cloud options like AWS, Azure etc.

    3. Analytics & Predictive Intelligence

The huge collection of data opens the possibility for rich analysis. The huge processing power is available at cheap rates and new software frameworks help to analyse the huge amount of data being collected. Not only are we now capable of analysing the past data, but we can predict the future. We can determine ongoing patterns to make important predictions relevant recommendations. We are all used to Amazon recommendations, but we also have recommendations for clothing, food to eat, restaurants to visit. As the data gets enlarged and enriched, we will get more intelligent recommendations.

The machine learning and analytics are powering connected intelligence. The mundane and hazardous tasks can be taken over by technology leaving the humans to focus on more value-enriching tasks. The technology intelligence and algorithms can make better decisions than human beings. Finance, healthcare, governance, transport, educations are being disrupted.

Is the golden age of technology real?

The paradigm shifts are causing changes in business, economic models, governance and our daily lives. The combined forces of DNA are solving biggest problems of the world. The world is moving towards better health systems, predictive diagnostics, safe driving, removing language barriers, greener technologies, digital governance etc. The possibilities are immense.

Technology giants, governments and innovators must address concerns of privacy, security and economic costs. The systems should be properly tested and compliances must be adhered to. Digital lives need digital assurance. But technology is an irreversible ride. A gun in the hand of a soldier protects the citizens and a gun in the hand of a terrorist harms the citizens. Technology is powered by human minds and it also powers the human mind. We must make the choices. No human being should work in dangerous mines or do scavenging jobs. At the same time, no machine can create magic of Picasso, J K Rowling or Roger Federer!

  • Attitude For Gratitude – Happy Thanksgiving Day

Attitude For Gratitude – Happy Thanksgiving Day

One of the most under-rated traits is an attitude for gratitude. We receive so many gifts from people and the world around us but we never acknowledge it.

It is nice to be intelligent, smart, kind and efficient but it is equally important to be thankful. Attitude for Gratitude matters. So let us be thankful for everything that we have got.

Thanksgiving season is here. More than the festivities, it is time to recollect our wonderful times and blessings of amazing people around us.

I wanted to acknowledge and thank all my friends and colleagues for the continued support and encouragement. Wishing you wonderful family celebrations with friends and family.

    Have a memorable Thanksgiving!

  • London’s First Muslim Mayor – A Landmark Event!

London’s First Muslim Mayor – A Landmark Event!

A Major Western Capital Gets A First Muslim Mayor! Landmark Event !

London get its first muslim mayor as Sadiq Khan storms the city halls !

Sadiq was indeed the frontrunner candidate who ran a positive, organised and focused campaign. He did not allow the Labour leadership issues of his party affect his path. Attempts by competitor Zac Goldsmith to link Sadiq to extremists and divide the electorate backfired.

It is indeed a global event as million of London voted for the best candidate. A strong message in today’s troubled times. Especially after Paris and Brussels attacks, the significance of a London Muslim mayor is even greater.

But Sadiq won because he was authentic and identified the real issues – affordable housing, rising cost of living etc. He has promised zero rise in transport fares. He has promise to make Oxford Street a pedestrian street. So he won on his ideas and the merit of his ideas.

It again proves that London is a truly meritocratic, professional and civil society – hence it is the global talent magnet. The spirit of London has won !

And our London mayor’s favourite London landmark – The Swaminarayan Temple in Wembley!

    2. Never yell at each other unless the house is on fire.

    4. If you have to criticise, do it lovingly.

5.Never bring up mistakes of the past.

    6. Neglect the whole world rather than each other.

    7. Never go to sleep with an argument unsettled.

    8. At least once everyday try to say one kind or complimentary thing to your life partner.

    9. When you have done something wrong, be ready to admit it and ask for forgiveness.

    10. It takes two to make a quarrel, and the one in the wrong is the one who does the most talking.

  • The Year End Musings

    The Year End Musings

    Technology:

    1. Cyber wars are here. Sony stopping its release of the movie “The Interview” was a big one. A behemoth like Sony could blink was disturbing. Though Sony released the movie online and in select theaters, the damage was done. North Korean Internet was down for a day. Lot of action for a movie – that was not worth the cyber war ! Freedom of speech is worth it.

    2. The Leaks business continue confirming that digital data is never secure. Amy Pascal and others kept PR agencies busy to manage the fall-out. Though Amy spoke venom for Angelina Jolie, her rights need to be protected. The Jennifer Lawrence episode was another reminder of the dangers of digital data. Security is going to be even bolder and bigger font for everyone – beyond traditional CIOs.

    3. Digital data may not seem secure but digital business is zooming ahead. Valuations of Indian e-commerce giants Flipkart and Amazon as compared to brick and mortar giants of the world clearly prove that the future is digital. India has again leap-frogged and embraced the digital economy – as more Indians from small towns and villages are buying from online and mobile marketplaces. As financial inclusion spreads and more Indians get connected, this will be even bigger.

    4. Security theme continued with the Uber drama in India and other parts of the world. The ban on Uber seemed inappropriate as Uber cannot be alone responsible for the tragedy. An organization cannot be banned for an illegal act by an employee. But what did not help was the approach and response from Uber – their processes can be improved. Sometimes issues need to be handled with kid gloves.

    5. Data Scientist and Social Media Analyst are the hottest jobs which highlight emerging IT trends.

    The World Around Us:

    1. Homo Sapiens now suffer from new disorders: FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), eCDA (e-Commerce Delivery Anxiety) and Nomophobia. Homophobia is the fear of being out of cell phone contact. According to a recent study, 53% of mobile phone users in Britain tend to be anxious when they ‘lose their mobile phone, run out of battery or credit, or have no network coverage. eCDA is a term for the anxiety caused by wait for the big online purchases made on Singles Day, Black Fridays, Cyber Monday, Boxing Day and other big shopping days.

    2. It took 132 kids to make us realize the monstrous inhuman threat that terrorism has become. Assam, Sydney, Nigeria – terrorism continued to be a global disease. ISIS, Boko Haram – new names but old acts of mass murders. 132 Dreams were buried in 132 Coffins. The whole India joined the grief – common man was shaken, people expressed their pain and sadness in many ways – that was real and it showed a sensitive and a caring nation. It also showed a great hope.

    3. ‘Germany 7 – Brazil 1’ surprised us more than crude oil hitting below USD 60 and falling of Russian economy. Not surprised that Scotland rejected Independence – ‘The Better Together’ campaign winning was a victory of wisdom and reason.

    4. Malaysian carriers are having a tragic run. Three crashes in a year is disastrous and demoralizing and just bad luck!

    5. Lack of compassion, lack of tolerance, lack of care, lack of faith, lack of sensitivity – are we human beings converting into our worst nightmarish robots?

    Personal:

    1. Moving countries is an ordeal. Moving countries with a kid and an infant is a bigger ordeal!

    2. Life exists beyond Facebook. And it is equally beautiful as well !

    3. Alcoholics can survive without alcohol. Workaholics cannot survive without work.

    4. I have still not figured out what really is more outrageous?
    – People wasting their time
    – People wasting their talent and gifts
    – People celebrating mediocrity

    5. Daughters are God’s biggest gift!

  • The Top 3 Out Of Office Replies

The Top 3 Out Of Office Replies

Its Holiday Season for a many colleagues and friends in Europe as well as US. Hence your passionately created email or thoughtful pitch can hit the robot in charge of the email and activate an automated “Out Of Office” (OoO) reply. Most of us delete the OoO replies without bothering too much about it. Similarly many of us just create a standard OoO that comes in MS Exchange or copy from somebody else’s OoO. I am told that many companies always have a template and a thick guideline book for creating OoO (Hope nobody is reading at my office!) But there are creative souls who break the monotony and compose a thoughtful OoO. It speaks volumes about themselves – their approach to life and work, not following the beaten paths, adding humor and intellect to the most mundane task, expressing creativity and finally courage!

I invite you share your best received OoO or composed OoO. And I encourage you to create a creative OoO. Please find the Top few OoO received recently – mentioned here randomly and in no order. .

    1. Janne’s OoO Reply

“ Greetings, human of Planet Earth.

Janne has requested me to regrettably inform you that he is currently on holiday. You know, the thing that humans do, where they plant their feet in sand and soak in the sun like, well, other vegetation, all the while we robots work on their menial and boring tasks, like responding to email. It’s not that Janne doesn’t appreciate your email, oh no! It’s just that at this moment he appreciates the freedom to not read your email a bit more. So he left me, his faithful robot, in charge. And here I am, responding to every email that comes in. Well, not all of them, of course. You would get really bored if I responded to every single one, ‘cos let’s face it, I’m not a very creative robot. I’ll just send you a periodical reminder that Janne is on vacation, maybe every few days, just often enough to make you feel a bit jealous that he is away and you’re not, but not often enough for you to get all worked up about it. That’s the kind of tiny little faithful robot that I am, yessirree. Always thinking about only the best for my human masters. And, sometimes, just a teeny-weeny bit about world domination.

    Enough digression!

Now, Janne will be reading his emails (assuming the little #%”&!/ hasn’t burned his squishy brain in the sun again), though he does not guarantee any swift response. If you have a generic question about <Janne’s Organization>, please drop a mail to for a faster response. If you need to talk tech to a human (who wouldn’t, ‘cos they’re so adorable and cuddly), contact Otherwise, please resend your email when Janne has returned from vacation.

    Yours,

Eugene, The Robot In Charge of Email.”

    2. Mike’s OoO

“Houston, we have a problem. We all love the power of email connecting people across continents. But… we’re drowning in it.”

So began an amazing blog post TED’s Chris Anderson posted earlier this year (http://bit.ly/oojA20). And I’m sure you, like me, are facing the same problem. Emails reproduce and spiral out of control much faster than we can keep up, creating a never ending death loop of messages. And before you know it, we’re doing what other people want us to do and not what we should be doing.

Why am I telling you this? Simple. I used to pride myself in getting back to emails within an hour or two, or at most, a day. But that hasn’t been happening for a while. And instead of letting that fact eat at me, which I have been tending to let happen of late, I have decided to try to tackle the problem and spread a solution I outline below.

The time I take to respond to you is in no way related to my interest in talking to you (it COULD be, but in most cases, it’s not.) I like to connect more than anyone else I know (other than potentially my friend Gary Vaynerchuk://bit.ly/pSjrcX) And I know that having this autoresponder on adds one more email to the system. But my goal is to use this one autoresponder to fix the problem not only for me, but for you as well. Yes, I’m adding another email to your box. But I hope to be taking many, many more out of your box by doing so.

The problem, you see, is one that we all share. It’s a “commons” problem and a problem that will only get better if we all want it to get better. The first step is to check out and internalize Chris’ email rules here: http://emailcharter.org/index.html.

As Chris writes, “To fix a ‘commons’ problem, a community needs to come together and agree on new rules. That’s why it’s time for an Email Charter. One that can reverse the escalating spiral of obligation and stress.”

The second rule is my favorite, and one I hope you understand as well: “Let’s mutually agree to cut each other some slack. Given the email load we’re all facing, it’s OK if replies take a while coming and if they don’t give detailed responses to all your questions. No one wants to come over as brusque, so please don’t take it personally. We just want our lives back!”

Of course, I’m not perfect. I’m sure I’ll continue to violate each of these rules. And some will be violated daily, or weekly. But we can only fix this problem if we all try our best.

Lastly, if this is an emergency and you need to reach me right away, please contact . Otherwise, I’ll do my best to get back to you. I promise.

Thanks for your understanding. And here’s to a world of more efficient emailers.

    Best,

MML

(Thanks Chirag for sharing this OoO)

    3. Oliver’s OoO

“I am out of the office until . Thank you for your email.

If you are reading this, the train wasn’t able to push the Delorian up to 88 miles per hour, and I am stuck in 1885. I won’t be able to respond to emails until exactly 09:00 on

If there is an urgent matter that needs attention please contact . Alternatively, kindly follow-up with me regarding your email (if your email still requires my attention) once I am back at my desk.”

Follow him: uk.linkedin.com/pub/oliver-werneyer/2/269/825 )

Good One – Eric Rozenberg’s OoO

The following is another good example. I did not receive it my in Inbox but got this via Yogesh. He came across Eric’s post and was inspired by it. Here it goes !

“Thank you for your email. I’m currently testing a new revolutionary App called “Holidays with the family.

With one click, it switches off all electronic devices, social media tools and internet connections. I know it’s like being back in the 20th century but it is only a few days experiment so I know I can count on your support and understanding until . I will revert once I am back.”

(Eric wrote a post about this as well and it was a big hit. Check It Out: https://www.linkedin.com/today/post/article/20140501214450-451934-my-favorite-app-holidays-with-the-family?trk=tod-home-art-list-large_0 )

There are many articles and blog posts on this topic. Even one on Linkedin Post – But I have tried to capture the real OoO that I experienced in last two weeks. For more on this topic, visit the Google machine – the favorites you will land up will have these top 3:

    1. I am currently out at a job interview and will reply to you if I fail to get the position.

    2. You are receiving this automatic notification because I am out of the office. If I was in, chances are you wouldn’t have received anything at all.

    3. Thank you for your email. Your credit card has been charged AED 25 for the first ten words, and AED 10 for each additional word in your message.

What do you think? Please send your favorite OoO.

  • Indian Public Servants’ Vulgar Use Of Red Beacons

Indian Public Servants’ Vulgar Use Of Red Beacons

    His Highness Respected Judge

    Hi ! Good Morning !

You may not know me. But I know you a bit. We are “Roadies”

Atleast 2-3 times a week, I drive the car myself at 9 am. And I get your company from Commerce Cross Roads To Thaltej Circle on Drive-In Road every morning. I reach office every early when I am following your car. My family thinks that I am still driving crazily. Actually, the secret is something different.

I follow your car. Your car has the “Lal Batti” or the “Red Beacon”. Your driver keep its ON for 50% of the time. At every traffic signal, he goes all blazing and adds the “Sarkari Sound” as well. As you know our traffic police are still serving Government Servants first and then citizens, so they allow your car to pass and the whole traffic goes for a toss. But it definitely ensures that we have a cake walk.

But I do not know why – but I do get upset. Now my CEO Rutesh Shah who also happens to be my mentor told me: “ Ashok – You are a good human being and a strong leader. But please understand that you cannot solve the world’s hunger problem. Please accept 10% inefficiency in the system and focus on the job at hand”. So I usually try to not challenge and question the “Sarkari” and “Self-Proclaimed” leaders everywhere around me.

But this thrice a week disregard for common public and vulgar display of power has finally hit me. I would have done RTI, posted your car picture with registration number (I have the car pictures!) etc etc. But another IT veteran and a mentor wrote in his book and I follow – “Not all wars are worth fighting for”.

Alcoholics Anonymous said “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, The courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference.”

But can a dog forget to wag his tail? No – I have to register my protest. And this is the mildest protest. I am writing this on my blog and putting it on my network.

India got independence in 1947. The-good-doctor-turned-scapegoat-PM gave us Economic Independence in 1991. Our ‘Nayak’ Kejriwal and TsuNamo Modi has changed the standard of expected behavior. Please change. You know the rules of using those privileges. So please do not embarrass yourself. Let me paste the link for you:

    http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Red-beacon-only-for-high-office-not-for-MPs-MLAs/articleshow/27198073.cms

Please do not use the “Red Light” and stop those blazing sounds. Remember, I have the pictures!

Finally, I appreciate one fact about of many good things that you possess. You are out of home at 9 am everyday ! Punctuality is the first sign of an organized individual. So I am sure you would like to continue and work on your strengths.

    Regards
    Ash

    Lal Batti

  • Modi Redefining, Opponents Anachronistic

    Modi Redefining, Opponents Anachronistic

Leadership Matters ! Leadership Shows !

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been in the top job for only about a fortnight. He was expected to bring optimism and efficiency – but he is clear surpassing expectations with his mission mode speed and clear sense of purpose. He has forced even his die-hard critics and the opposition to acknowledge that this is a different Modi. All the so-called adjectives and fear created around him sound so silly and anachronistic.

Modi means business. A look at his first steps:

    1. The Pakistan Masterstroke: By inviting Nawaz Sharif and the entire SAARC bloc, Modi has proved that he is wired differently. He has shown that he understand the ground realities. Not only has he created new opportunities for Indo-Pak relations, he has won the domestic community. For India to be accepted as a global super-power, it needs to be recognized as a natural leader in SAARC. All will grow around India. I am sure he would have told them – India is going to grow like crazy in the next years – all of us can enjoy the growth together and all of you will benefit as well.

    2. The Cabinet Signal: Modi has created a cabinet team of the people that will work as per his wishes and deliver as per the promises made. He has rewarded loyalty – Jaitley and Smriti Irani. He has welcomed new faces and empowered minister of states.

    3. The Empowered Bureaucracy: Modi knows that for his plans to succeed, bureaucrats have to deliver. His immediate appointment of his team of Mishra, Doval sent a clear signal to everyone. He has held direct meetings and provided his full support to honest officers. The bureaucrats were disillusioned, de-motivated and directionless in the previous government – here they have the great opportunity to take India forward.

    4. Clear Expectations: Modi has set clear expectations to the team, ministers and party. He has to deliver. Whether working on the 100 day plan or identifying old acts to be repealed, he has set his clear goals. Such clarity only helps everyone and energizes and excites the team towards reaching the goals effectively.

    5. Deliver With Humility And Integrity: He has asked his team and ministers to avoid appointing relatives. He has asked ministers to be in touch with their area. He has asked them to deliver and work effectively for re-election in 2019. Gifts are to be shunned. Favor-seeking people are to be shunned.

    6. Japan-China-US: Modi has excellent relations with Japan and China. He is a pragmatic and he is held in high esteem in those countries. Manmohan was a good boy and had respect, but he was never taken seriously and could not make impact. Modi has taken the right steps with Japan and China as well.

    7. Importance of Communication: The joke was that within one day of election, Modi spoke more than the previous Prime Minister ! He has launched the redefined PM Site. He has very intelligently used the election social media machinery and transforming the same for policy discussions and ongoing communication. He has held several meetings and is clearly ensuring communication and transparency.

By accepting to go to US without any fuss, Modi has shown that he is not the prisoner of past. Though he has excellent relations with east, he knows that US matters and he would be happy to leverage the strengths.

    The other notable actions include:
    1. Disbanding GOMs and EGOMs
    2. Strong assurance to investors – Only red carpet, not red tape.
    3. Shunning Sycophancy – No Modi chapters in books, No touching of feet,
    4. Personal Example – Working relentlessly from Day one
    5. Avoiding transfers, continuing with old officers
    6. E-auctions for defence deals beyond 10 lakhs

I understand it is too early to judge the impact. But the environment has changed. The bureaucrats are excited. Citizens are interested in government. world is taking note of India again. Swaminathan Ankleshwaria Iyer said that the animal spirits are backed in stock market. Shashi Tharoor noted that this is Modi 2.0 and we should encourage it.

It is an opportunity not be missed ! Let us hope the good run continues !

    Modi-Nawaz
