    My Life With Rati Kaka

Shri Ratilal Premchand Chandaria is many things to many people. For me, he was my father figure. For our family, GujaratiLexicon Team and crores of GujaratiLexicon user, he was just our loved ‘Rati Kaka’.

I still remember that rainy day in July 2005. One fine day we got a phone call that certain Mr Chandaria wants to meet us. Not knowing anything, we said OK. That was a strange meeting for me and my team. Ratibhai could not hear us, Sachin was helping him. But he was very interested in knowing about us and the work we have done on Gujarati. He asked us many questions, some not so comfortable. That day he told very little about himself. He asked me to research about his passionate project. I said OK. He left. I was very surprised and curious.

After he had gone, when I explored his project, I was wonderfully surprised. I was amazed to see the phenomenal work done by him. He had achieved something impossible – something which Universities or large companies or Government should be doing. And he achieved this solely on the basis of his devotion, efforts and enterprise at the age of 83. He had given 20 years of devotion and dedicated service to this project. 20 years is a long time – our experience of a little more than 20 months on Gujarati language had been very frustrating and thankless. Also, he was spending time on a collective good, rather than pursuing his business. Had he spent the same time and effort and passion on his business, he would have added more jewels to his business treasure. But he choose to work for his mother tongue.

He has chased people in USA, UK, Canada, Germany, France, India etc. He has approached companies like Microsoft, Apple, CMC, etc. He fulfilled his passion for Gujarati typing and has worked on all technologies, equipments and issues to fulfill his burning desire to benefit Gujaratis and non-Gujaratis to learn Gujarati with pride. In fact, inspite of his weak health, he had come down traveling for 2 hours on Mumbai roads to meet us. He had postponed his trip to London once he came to know about us.

Our interactions increased and we started working together. It culminated into the release of GujaratiLexicon on Jan 13, 2006. The GujaratiLexicon Project became famous and its users increased. The project became a common passion. The GL Trustee Team of Rati Kaka, Uttam Gajjar, Balvant Patel, Mansukh Shah and Vipool Kalyani worked very closely. We got support and encouragement from Dhirubahen Patel. We added more features to Gujaratilexicon and it continued to touch lives of people across the world. Digital Bhagwadogmandal, Digital Sarth Kosh, Lok Kosh, Kids Corner, Crossword, Mobile Apps etc are the worthy additions to the mighty project. The digital version of BhagwadGomandal reached the young generation and surpassed the print circulation of decades in a few months. It is archived in the US Congress Library and British Library Catalogue as a landmark work of Gujarati – an achievement made possible under his leadership.

In those years, I came across the extraordinary individual that Ratibhai is. He is a person with tremendous zeal and energy. He is a person who is razor sharp in his thinking, intellect and memory. He is very kind and caring. He cannot accept NO for an answer. I am yet to come across a person more humble than Ratibhai. He never speaks about his contribution, efforts, past laurels etc. He only wants to leave something for the future generation. We youth can learn the important lessons of dedicated service, relentless pursuit of goal, endless energy from him. His loving and caring nature adds another dimension to his greatness.

I was privileged to spend very close time with him. Whenever he would return to India, I would get a call from his team asking me to meet him immediately. Whenever I would go to his Mumbai home, he would ensure that I had my favorite vegetables (I am a fussy eater) and there was a PAN for me to eat. We shared our love for PAN and Pani Puri. When he was outside of India, Skype would ensure that we remained in touch. When I went to London, he would prepare tea for both of us in the morning. When I went out of his home in London, he taught me to navigate London’s metro. He would wait for me to return home. He would sit late till night and talk. And his talks would be about gujarati language, technology and helping people. He never talked about himself !

He was always there for me – my marriage, birth of Aditya and other milestones of life. When my wife was pregnant, he wrote emails to her and after her pregnancy, he was the first one to visit her – even ahead of my other family members. Whenever I had to make any decision or whenever I was low – one Skype call to him and I would be clearer. He was my life mentor. He stayed at my house in Ahmedabad and time would fly. And so would Kulfis and Pans. He was a foodie and would love exploring good food.

God has made him for a special purpose – he was indeed a divine soul. He was a melting pot of golden heart overflowing with lots of love, tons of generosity and unbelievable kindness. He worked his entire life with the agility of a roaring tiger and lived his life with his principles. He has led his life by example and built a successful and sustainable business. And then contributed to larger goals. No wonder, his contemporaries and his friends find inspiration from his life.

GL team is indeed honored to make a small contribution to this great work. We pray that the project should reach maximum Gujaratis across the world, create more linguists and contemporarize Gujarati for the future. Rati Kaka lives on in our hearts and GujaratiLexicon.

Rati Kaka – Suddenly life looks strange without you. I will always miss you!

    London Restaurants

London has overtaken Mumbai as a second home ! Eating in London has been a overall good experience.

Chiquito at Leicester Square has been a great experience. The Mexican Food is awesome and service is very effective. Being a vegeterian, I love the options I get here. Also being in the heart of London, we can always catch up a great dinner with the desserts at Ben And Jerry’s. Of course, there are many other options in all cuisines at Leicester Square.

Italian Bistro at Paddington takes the prize for quick effective service, good food and decent prices.

After a few days in London, nothing beats the taste of Indian food. It makes you feel home. My best experience have been with South Indian food chains and Masala Zone. Masala Zone is an up-market Indian restaurant but they serve good food and have a great Indian ambience. They had 6-7 restaurants in London and each one has a different ambience and look and feel. One has Rajasthani puppets while another one has Bollywood theme etc. My last visit was at the Bayswater Road restaurant, where we were 15 minutes ahead of opening time but we were allowed in and asked to be seated while they get started. Good. The lady was courteous and she explained the stuff to our non-Indian guest. Impressive. Saraswati Bhavan, Chennai Dosa and Sarvanna Bhavan are the amazing South Indian food joints in Wembley. I just love them. Sagar in Hammersmith and Oxford Street are also wonderful.

The Dishoom restaurant is another classy Indian restaurant with a great spirit and culture. It revisits the Bombay Cafe experience !

Apart from these, I find the usual global chains to be quite handy when eating out. Costa, Starbucks and Nero are my staple coffee joints. Among restaurants, Pizza Hut (Marble Arch, Piccadilly), Subway, Zizzi are good ones.

Of course, I have had interesting experiences in London as well. We had one meeting in the Brick Lane. The Brick Lane is a Bangladeshi area with full of Balti and Curry Restaurants. It was interesting to experience a totally non-British area. It was a fully desi area. There was a petty-coat street which was like Mumbai’s Fashion Street or Linking Road Street Market or Relief Road Market of Ahmedabad. It was a flea market with dirt cheap rates. It was 11:50 am and we decided to have an early lunch as the next meeting was at 1 pm. We entered a Japanese restaurant near Liverpool Street Station. The lady stopped us. She said – The restaurant is not open yet. I asked – what time it will open? She said 12 noon. I asked – can we wait? it is only 10 minutes? She said – No. Please hang out ! I was wondering where was customer service? Where was any attention? No wonder there is recession !

I had a similar experience at a Chinese restaurant in Paddington. We had Aubergine on an earlier occasion. We wanted to try something different. Boss saw Beancurd in Hot Garlic Sauce curry. He asked whether he can have Vegetables in that. The lady said No. She was adamant. We asked why ? She said it will not taste good. We thought it was our decision. Then we saw Mix Vegetables in Hot Garlic Sauce in the Menu. We asked can we have that and can you include Beancurd in that. She said yes – we were just smiling !

  • The Global Wealth Pyramid

    The Global Wealth Pyramid

I recently came across the Credit Suisse Report on Global Wealth Pyramid. It confirms lot of existing knowledge – it gives us exact statistics.

Less than 1% of world’s populations controls nearly 40% of world’s wealth !
Less than 10% of world’s populations controls more than 80% of world’s wealth !

    Interesting indeed…

    Read the full report…

The Global Wealth Pyramid made see some change in the next few decades…I definitely see that the Indian Middle Class is growing by leaps and bounds. It represents the great opportunity for the whole world. The next big opportunity is in Africa. China is already investing in Africa to take advantage of that opportunity. China is rising faster and quicker. The dragon vs elephant debate maybe soon over….

But what is progress? What is wealth? It means different things to different individuals. These terms cannot be defined by GDP figures alone. Civilization and countries need to redefine these terms for creating a sustainable, tolerant, peaceful, compassionate and humane society !

  • Indian Of The Year – 2010

It is that time of the year – list, ratings, rankings, best of 2010 etc. Movies, Actors, People, Events, Incident…

Time Magazine has named Facebook Mark Zuckberg has the ‘Person of the year 2010’ !

Personally, I thought it would be Wikileak’s Julian Assange. Maybe Time did not want Federal Action against it !

Who would be the Indian Of The Year 2010?

    Nitish Kumar?
    Saina Nehwal?
    Sushil Kumar?
    Salman Khan?

According to me, it has to be Saina Nehwal – bringing pride, happiness and hope to Indian sports and Indians. It was a year when she and other Indian sports persons ensured that non-cricket sports got their due and recognition. They allowed us to think about the sporting side of CWG. Sania is currently No.2 in the world. Hope she does not go the Sania way !

  • Ahmedabad Among Forbes’ List Of 19 Fastest Growing Cities

Forbes Magazine has listed Ahmedabad as one of the fastest growing cities. Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai are the three Indian cities to be listed in “The Next Decade’s Fastest Growing Cities’ list.

    Forbes Report says:

India, although not by plan, also is experiencing a boom in once relatively obscure cities. Its rising urban centers include Bangalore (home of Infosys and Wipro), Ahmedabad (whose per-capita incomes are twice that of the rest of India) and Chennai (which has created 100,000 jobs this year).

Ahmedabad is the largest metropolitan region in Gujarat, perhaps the most market-oriented and business-friendly of Indian states. Gujarat’s policies helped lure away the new Tata Nano plant from West Bengal (Kolkata) to Sanand, one of Gurajat’s exurbs. One Indian academic, Sedha Menon, compares the state–which has developed infrastructure more quickly than its domestic rivals–with Singapore and parts of Malaysia. Per-capita incomes in Gujarat are more than twice the national average. India’s seventh-largest city has a population of roughly 5.7 million and is expected, according to the U.N., to grow to over 7.6 million by 2025.

One of the frequently asked questions to us at Infostretch is : Why did choose Ahmedabad for such a wonderful business? I hope we have an satisfactory answer !

InfoStretch chose Ahmedabad because we realized it was a growing city. The GenNext talent was improving and they are catching up with the global talent. The Infrastructure like Power, Roads, Connectivity was phenomenal. We have zero power cuts – unheard in India ! The overall business environment and outlook looked positive. We have grown from 20 people company to 160 people company and still growing ! It is indeed Vibrant Gujarat !

    Cheers Ahmedabad !
