    Good Book : Absolute Khushwant

I recently read Absolute Khushwant: The Low-Down on Life, Death and Most Things In-Between by Khushwant Singh & Humra Quraishi. It is another refreshing, honest and delightful Book by Khushwant Singh. His simple, no-nonsense, friendly and conversational style is always a pleasure to read. His unique perspective on important events of the country and important personalities is insightful. He speaks about why he supported the Emergency, his fondness for Sanjay Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and his dislike for Advani. He tells why he returned his medal to the Government.

The candidness, transparency and courage to write all the personal stories is something that indeed separates him for the others. He speaks about love, life, death, sex etc. Khushwant is an author I like reading again and again !

But, Train To Pakistan still remains his favorite work for me.

  • Book Summary: Execution by Ram Charan

Execution is one of the must-read management books. It is an excellent book on getting things done and explains the strategic importance of Execution. I am sharing some core ideas of the books.

    Execution – The Core Idea

    1. Execution is the bridge between Promises Made and Results Delivered.
    2. Execution is the hidden differentiator
    3. Execution is not simple tactics but is a separate and distinct business discipline. It is an integral part of the strategy.
    4. Execution must be the main concern and focus of every business leader.
    5. Execution must be placed at the very core of the corporate culture.

    Building Blocks:

There are three building blocks of Strategy:

    A. Leaders who understand execution
    B. Culture focused on execution
    C. Right people in the right places

Let us look into the more details:

    A. Leaders who understand execution

    1. Leaders live their businesses.
    2. Insist on realism.
    3. Focus on few clear priorities
    4. Follow through on assignment – Follow-up
    5. Reward those who do rather than who say they will do
    6. Coach People – So they can get better at what is required.
    7. Genuine emotional fortitude

Let us look at Point 3 – Focus on Clear Priorities.

    It means:
    – Focus on at most 3-4 Priorities
    – Set Clear / Realistic Goals for each Priority
    – Strive To Keep Everything As Simple As Possible
    – Remind People Of These Priorities
    – Continue To Talk Directly About These Priority Areas
    – Have A Common Sense Approach To Business

    Leaders have following strengths:
    – Authenticity : Doing what you say
    – Self Awareness – Being comfortable with your strengths
    – Self Mastery – Knowing what you are talking about
    – Humility – Keeping your ego in check

    B. Culture focused on execution

Leadership without the discipline of execution is incomplete and ineffective.

Stronger and more transparent the linkage between performance and rewards the better.

  • Book Review : Connect The Dots

Rashmi Bansal’s new book – ‘Connect The Dots‘ is a follow-up to her hugely successful book ‘Stay Hungry Stay Foolish’. The earlier book mentioned the inspiring stories of IIMA graduates. Connect The Dots is about successful entrepreneurs without the typical MBA degree.

The book has classified entrepreneurs in three categories:
    1. Jugaad – Ones who have no formal business training and learnt by observation, experimentation and application of mind.
    2. Junoon – Ones who are driven by passion and ideas which are ahead of its time.
    3. Zubaan – Ones who are creative people with unique talent

The book has a biographical account of the entrepreneur and advice to other entrepreneurs – same style as Stay Hungry Stay Foolish. The selection of the entrepreneurs is interesting indeed which adds diversity to the book and the subject of entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurs behind success stories like Reva, Dosa Plaza, Su-Kam, Crossword, Tantra T-Shrits, Veta, Fem Care are featured as well as Film Director Paresh Mokashi and Wildlife Photographer Kalyan Verma. Though there are no formulas to success, it is interesting to know the journey of the fellow entrepreneurs.

Rashmi Bansal’s style and language is amazing as always ! She has got another bestseller !

  • Book Review : Roots And Wings

Every parent wants to give nothing but the best to child.

I became a father recently. I had my own questions. Will I be a good parent? How do I help my child to become a good human being? How do I help him to protect his individuality ? How do I prevent myself from imposing my values and principles on him? How do I safeguard him from evils of the society?

I understand parenting is a big responsibility. But it is a joyous activity as well. I was doing it in my own way. But a few questions remained.

One fine day, I happened to notice this amazing book in Crossword. It was titled Roots and Wings – A Handbook for Parents by Raksha Bharadia. Normally, I avoid books with phrases as – handbook, 8 laws of success, How to win deals etc.

However, I happened to read the  preface and contents. I somehow liked the book and I bought it. The note on book said:

Roots And Wings – A Handbook for Parents addresses parenting conflicts and dilemmas how to manage the thin line between freedom and structure, space and control, being a mentor and a friend, our expectations of the child versus his native endowments. This book is about giving our children roots, so that they can stand firm and wings, so that they may soar and achieve their potential.

As I started reading it, it was clear that I had made a good investment. This was going to be my ‘must-have’, ‘must gift’ and ‘keep revisiting’ books.

I liked a lot of concepts and appreciate Raksha’s thinking. Her writing on fostering creativity, free time, importance of childhood buddies, role of nature and sports, dealing with child’s self-esteem – anger – failure were insightful. I liked the idea of giving the child a free time and not overloading his schedule like Dad’s planner. Allowing a child to explore his world is equally important.

The tile is very apt. The books speaks about giving the roots to child to stand firm in life. And giving wings to allow the child to soar high in life and achieve the potential.

Raksha has done an amazing job. She has helped me to find some answers. The book simply connected !

The book is not preachy. It has practical tips and ideas how to create a right environment and help child to develop positive self-esteem. It also has rich experiences and quotes from people from all walks of life including Javed Akhtar, Sachin Tendulkar, Kumar Managalam Birla.

Roots and Wings – Highly recommended – For parents, new and learning ones !

  • Book Review : The Go – Giver

Recently, I read ‘The Go – Giver‘ by Bob Burg and John David Mann. As suggested by the cover, it is a little story about a powerful business idea. And what is that powerful business idea?

    Giving !

Yes. Giving. Give more to receive more. Add more value to get more money. Add value faster to get value faster.

The authors present this central concept through protagonist Joe’s story. The parable is simple and the characters and story is predictable. However, it lives a good impression and sets you thinking. Hmm. This is special!

The book is a good collection of the classical ideas. These principles are presented in form of The Five Laws of Stratospheric Success.

    1. The Law of Value:
Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.

    2. The Law of Compensation:
Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them.

    3. The Law of Influence
Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first.

    4. The Law of Authenticity
The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself.

    5. The Law of Receptivity
The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving.

The book also covers The Law of Attraction (The Secret is the best adaption) and the ‘Survive-Save-Serve’ Concept.

I agree to the ‘The Go-Giver’ snapshot of the book
Imparted with wit and grace, The Go-Giver is a heartwarming and inspiring tale that brings new relevance to the old proverb “give and you shall receive.”

If you want to read a short, quick and easy going inspirational book in simple English, try ‘The Go – Giver’.

  • Book: Hot, Flat, And Crowded

Thomas L Friedman, the celebrated author of ‘The World Is Flat’ is back with his new book : Hot, Flat and Crowded. The focus is on Environment. The focus is on how America can take leadership. I expect the books to cover energy issues, clean energy, rise of Chindia and demand of energy, change of American habits, global responsibility etc.

Thomasd Friedman has been campaigning about this for some time now.

Indeed, environment is the next in thing. It is the area that is often ignored in quest for development and comforts. America will need to provide leadership as it is the biggest consumer of energy. It will have to align and inspire developing nations. It is a tough task! However, this is an area where the entire mankind will have to think creatively. Expect more ‘back-to-village’ romantics, more ‘local food’ consumers!

  • Book Review : Chetan Bhagat’s The Three Mistakes of My Life

    3Mistakes

The hype around Chetan Bagat’s new book ‘The 3 Mistakes of My Life’ is understandable. His previous works, Five Point Something and One Night @ The Call Center are runaway hits. They still dominate book store top ten lists in fiction across the country.

And indeed they are well-written, simple and interesting stories with the right message to appeal to today’s youth. Five Point Something inspired other campus stories including Above Average, Watch Out We Are MBA, Anything For You Madam etc. So it is natural to have huge expectations from ‘The 3 Mistakes of My Life’. And that was the only mistake of all Chetan Bhagat Fans. Like mutual fund disclaimers this is true – past performance is not an indicator of future returns.

I finished ‘The 3 Mistakes of My Life’ in 3 hours. The first thought after reading it was that the author seemed confused. I was at a loss to what the author wanted to convey. The book is full of stereotypes and not in the same league as the first two books. The book is about 3 friends and is set in Ahmedabad with a detour to Australia. It has popular themes like friendship, love, cricket, religion and business to make it a masala book. But it is not different nor presents any new perspective. Even if you do not read this book, you are not at a loss.

The 3 Mistakes of My Life just seemed to be a good marketing title. All the three are not mistakes in true sense. Of the three, two do not seem to error in judgement – but everyone needs to make those errors to grow up. And one mistake is repeated again and again, which does not make it a mistake but a habit.

The book grabs the life and colors of Amdavadi life in a very beautiful manner. The book will be popular in Ahmedabad as people can relate to it better and already Chetan Bhagat, Sudha Murthy are very popular in Ahmedabad. Also Big Bazaar’s Depot and other books stores are heavily promoting the book which has an attractive price tag of Rs 95.

The 3 Mistakes of My Life is readymade for Bollywood. Already, Chetan’s other books are in different stages of production in Bollywood and this is next in line.

Overall, the book is not extraordinary. However, Chetan Bhagat has made his place in Indian publishing history. And even great masters sometimes fail to live upto their usual high standards. It happens. Anyway, we are with you Chetan!

  • Bhagvad Gita : Eternal Classic

Shri Kirshna’s Bhagvad Gita is one of the most profound and enduring works ever produced. It is the best spiritual and management book I have ever come across. There is answer of every dilemma, every problem in Bhagvad Gita. One of the most amazing thing about Bhagvad Gita is that no matter how many times one reads it, it is always refreshing. Every reading brings out a new perspective and initiates a new thought.

The second and the third chapter are the most important chapters of Bhagvad Gita. Here are some of the important teachings of Gita.

    Message Of Gita
    – The message of the Gita is action. Desireless action.
    – He who gives up action falls. He who gives up the reward only rises!
    – Renunciation of fruits of action is a must.
    – Renunciation of the fruits of action is impossible without devotion – bhakti
    – The body has been given to us only in order that we may serve all creation with it.
    – Life is given to us for service and not for enjoyment. Hence we must impart a sacrificial character to life.
    – Service rendered with selfish motives ceases to be a sacrifice

    Desireless Action
    – No one can remain even for a moment without doing work.
    – Everyone is made to act helplessly by the impulses born of nature.
    – Without work life cannot be sustained.
    – Everyone should do their alloted work because action is always better than inaction.
    – Action is a moral as well as a physical necessity for embodied beings
    – But one free self from the desire for fruits of action / work.
    – One should perform work that has to be done without attachment and thereby attain to the highest.
    – Whatever a great man does, the same is done by others as well. Whatever standard he sets, the world follows.
    – Desire is never satisfied by the enjoyment of the objects of desire. It grows more and more as does the fire to which fuel is added.
    – Perform action with knowledge and concentration

    Learning & Humility – Vidyavinayasampanne
    – Great learning brings great humility
    – As our knowledge increases we become aware of the encircling darkness
    – Little knowledge leads to dogmatism, a little more to questioning and a little more takes us to prayer

    Self
    – Man should lift himself by himself
    – Self alone is the friend of self
    – Self alone is the enemy of self
    – The supreme is within us

    Enjoying Eternal Peace
That Yogi is fit to be united with Brahama and enjoy Eternal peace, who is:
    – Performing his own duty
    – Mind under control
    – Given up the 5 sense objects
    – Overcome likes and dislikes
    – Lives in solitude
    – Achieves mastery of mind, body and speech by abstemiousness
    – Ever conscious of the living presence of God
    – Given up pride, desire, anger, acquisitiveness
    – Neither rejoices nor indulges in grief

    Sattva, Rajas & Tamas
Three gunas born of nature bind the soul down. They are Sattva, Rajas and Tamas.

Sattva (Goodness) Pure, unsullied, gives light and hence source of happiness
    Rajas (Passion) Attachment, craving, indulgence
    Tamas (Ignorance) Delusion, negligent, indolent

    Sattva brings Happiness
    Rajas brings Restlessness
    Tamas brings Sloth

When Sattva rules, light of wisdom shines through all the activities of the body
When Rajas rules, greed, bustle, unrest and competition are observed
When Tamas rules, ignorance, sloth and delusion rules

When Sattva dominates life, Man is born in the sinless worlds of the great sages after death
When Rajas dominates life, Man is born among those who are attached to action
When Tamas dominates life, Man returns to the womb of senseless

    Fruit of Sattva is Purity
    Fruit of Rajas is Pain
    Fruit of Tamas is Ignorance

Sattva Man rises to higher regions
Rajas Man lives in this world
Tamas Man sinks to the underworld

    Sattvic Men worship God
Rajasa Men worship Demigods & Demons
Tamasa Men worship Spirit of The Dead

    Wisdom
    What is Wisdom?
    – Humility
    – Unpretentiousness
    – Non-Violence
    – Forgiveness
    – Rectitude
    – Service of the teacher
    – Purity
    – Steadfastness
    – Self-Restraint
    – Indifference to sense objects
    – Absence of egoism
    – Insight into the evil of birth, death and old age
    – Disease and pain
    – Detachment from wife and children, hearth and home, friends and relations
    – Equi-mindedness to good and bad fortune
    – Whole-hearted devotion to God
    – Love of solitude
    – Dislike for the enjoyment of sensual pleasures in company with others
    – Thirst for knowledge of the soul
    – Beatific vision

    Devotion
Devotion required by the Gita is no soft-hearted effusiveness. It is no blind faith. The devotion of the Gita has the least to do with externals.
    He is a devotee who:
    – Jealous of none
    – Flount of mercy
    – Without egotism
    – Selfless
    – Treats alike cold and heat, happiness and misery
    – Ever forgiving
    – Always contented
    – Resolutions are firm
    – Dedicated mind and soul to God
    – Cause no dread
    – Not afraid of others
    – Pure
    – Versed In action and yet remains unaffected by it
    – Renounces all fruit – good or bad
    – Treats friend and foe alike
    – Untouched by respect or disrespect
    – Not puffed up by praise
    – Not dejected when people speak ill of him
    – Loves silence and solitude
    – Disciplined reason
    – No attachment

    Yogi / Devotee / Rest
    – No man of honest life comes to grief
    – No good man can come to an evil end
    – God knows our weaknesses and the efforts we make to overcome them
    – Great yogin is a great devotee
    – Four kinds of devotees – the man in distress, the seeker for knowledge, the seeker for wealth and the man of wisdom
    – Self-discipline is not a matter of intelligence. It is a matter of will and emotion. Self-discipline is easy when there is vision of the highest.
    – When a man dwells in his mind on the objects of sense, attachment to them is produced. From attachment springs desire and from desire comes anger.
    – From anger arise bewilderment, from bewilderment loss of memory and from loss of memory the destruction of intelligence and from the destruction of intelligence he perishes.
    – When the mind runs after the roving senses, it carries away the understanding, even as a wind carries away a ship on the waters. To hate the senses is as wrong as to love them. Be equi-minded.

    Rituals
    – Just as one who gets water from the river does not attach importance to a well, so the wise does not attach any importance to ritual action. For those of illuminated consciousness, ritual observances are of little value.

The above are key teachings of Gita which I found interesting. One can read Bhagvad Gita any time and start from any chapter. It has not to be read from start to end. It indeed is a timeless classic.

I have also read Dhammapada. According to Dhammapada, the greatest gain is health, the greatest wealth is contentment, one’s best friend is faith and the highest happiness is nirvana.

So have you read Bhagvad Gita? What do you think about it? What other spiritual books have you read? What do other spiritual texts say?
