    Forbes Asia’s 30 Under 30

What a list of accolades! Srikanth Bolla’s is an inspirational figure with hordes of achievements that even fully abled can only dream of! Srikanth is a visionary who happens to be visually challenged.

I had the great honour of interviewing the legendary Srikanth Bolla in a fireside chat at Apexon. Anand Kabra, our Chief People and Transformation Officer, facilitated the event as part of Celebrating Apexon.

Srikanth shared his journey from a sightless newborn to an award-winning industrialist.Srikanth’s life is indeed extra ordinary – an ecstatic father names his son after legendary cricketer Srikanth but is shattered to see a sightless baby. He is about to be buried alive, but mother begs for his life and saves him. The bullying in school, the rise in a special school, fighting and winning the case against Indian education system for not allowing visually challenged students to study science, getting a place in Indian cricket team, rejection by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), selection by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), life in America, return to India, struggles for setting up his business and his entrepreneurial success. He was President Abdul Kalam’s hero and he invested in Srikanth’s startup.

Srikanth shared the journey of his life with all the ups and downs with an unprecedented level of candour and authenticity – he even revealed his mistakes and bad habits.

Apexon associates and their family were highly inspired by Srikanth and the non-stop flow of questions was a proof of his impact.

A few excerpts of Srikanth’s quotes:

I am sightless, not visionless. Sight is of the eyes, but the vision comes from the mind.

    I can do anything.

The challenges, insults and bullying motivated me further to do well in life.

The fight is in my internal DNA. I will not accept things as they are – I will fight for the change. I am not afraid of anyone or anything.

I believe in equality and equal ability. I do not want reservation, nor I tick the ‘blind’ column in any form.

I aspire to be India’s first visually challenged president. India can be a first world country. And I have a vision for the new India.

    Loneliness is the biggest poverty.

I am a workaholic and restless person, but I do appreciate and endorse the need for a healthy work life balance.

My company employees’ people with all different abilities. I believe compassion is what makes you rich.

My favourite movies are Mahanati, Dhoni, and Soorarai Pottru. I can watch my favourite movies even 100 times.

I would love to play myself in a movie.

Srikanth movie was made in 41 days, and everyone was very committed. The movie was made in 20% less than allocated budget. Sharad Kelkar charged only Rs 111 for the movie.

Tu Mil Gaya is my favorite song from Srikanth movie

    I love non-vegetarian food.

Truly, it was an amazing and enchanting evening with Srikanth who indeed is a living example that everything is possible when one has a clear goal and is totally determined! If Sri can, so can we!

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s ‘An Uncommon Love: The Early Life of Sudha and Narayana Murthy’ covers all of the above and more themes!

Like its iconic subjects, Uncommon Love is a simple, candid and honest story of the early life of Sudha and Narayan Murthy. The couple have led a very private life and hence it is quite insightful to get a peek into their personal world. The book is filled with rich anecdotes which are a delight for everyone. These tales give us a clear understanding of the individual traits of Sudha and Narayan.

Indeed a few stories stand out:

Sudha Murty is a movie buff and a certified ‘First Day First Show’ fan. She won the title of Miss Cinema, after winning the bet to watch one movie every day of the year in a theatre! I can relate to it totally!

She was the only woman in the engineering class of 150 men and had to face a lot of challenges including derogatory comments and total unkindness. Her admission conditions included compulsory wearing of saree, no access to canteen and no chatting with boys! The college had no toilet and she had to travel to home in break. But not only she excelled despite the systemic misogyny, she won the respect of everyone!

She got prestigious MIT admission but she gave it up for a shop floor job at Telco – A job where she challenged J R D Tata for ‘men only’ employment policy of Tatas and won the coveted job. She faced similar challenges like the engineering college but her persistence and diligence and professionalism won the day. Later in life, she cried profusely when she visited MIT.

Sudha supported the entrepreneurial dreams of Murthy emotionally, physically and even financially! Murthy would be broke and she would loan money and fund their expenses. She had a notebook of loans which she destroyed on their wedding day.

She regularly financed Infosys and saved it – even pawned her wedding jewellery. She had to be away from her young daughter Akshata to help Infosys as well as manage her job.

Narayan Murthy got an IIT admission but his father’s financial situation forced him to turn it down. He was devastated.

He learnt English due to the nudge and kind help of a roadside shopkeeper!

He proposed to Sudha in an autorickshaw. Though she agreed, her father was not convinced. Narayana also had worn a Red Shirt when meeting his prospective in-laws and gave weird responses to their questioning.

He turned down a lucrative job offer at Hindustan Lever because of the ‘separate toilets’ policy.

Azim Premji interviewed Murthy but did not offer him the job as he thought Murthy was too simple. What if Azim Premji had hired Narayan Murthy?

Narayan Murthy founded Infosys but he gave a lion’s share to all other colleagues. All the other co-founders got big equity share – more than the normal business parlance. He kept only 30% and distributed the rest. He took a 90% salary cut while gave a 20% hike to others. He always focussed on the comfort of the employees. Compassionate Capital is his mantra!

Narayan Murthy did not allow Sudha to join Infosys as he wanted to create a totally professional company. He told her that if she wants to join Infosys, he will support her decision – he would leave and let her run the show. Sudha was very disappointed, hurt and angry. These hard decisions created Infosys as a different company (there was a brief departure from this position when Rohan joined as EA for a short period).

What if Sudha Murthy ran Infosys?

Murthy was busy building Infosys and could not spend time with the kid. The children felt that Infosys was the third sibling – the favourite child that never grew up and required constant attention.

He continues to be the simpleton. He cleans his own toilet.

Sudha clearly emerges as the brighter, smarter and more generous with her untold sacrifices. But Narayan Murthy’s simplicity, humanity, ethical approach and care for everyone else is his distinguishing hallmark. As Sudha said, he was the trapeze artist in the circus and she was the safety net!

In summary, Uncommon Love is a great read. The author’s grip on the content is not consistent and the book is bereft of any pictures – the one big disappointment in such a rich historically important biography. While the childhood, career, courtship, marriage, childbirth and entrepreneurship is captured well, the rise of Infosys and Sudha’s author career is very rushed.

The love, understanding, respect and support that Sudha and Narayan gave each other is the core message of the book. They do not need anyone else other than each other’s company. They are mirror to each other and their bond strengthened by shared values and idealistic principles.

The book also gives a glimpse of the challenges that Narayan Murthy faced in setting up Infosys after his first failure as an entrepreneur. Indeed it is due to persistence of him and likes of Fakir Chand Kohli, that India has emerged as an IT superpower – that would change the glo

  • Elon Musk – An Eccentric Genius!

Elon Musk – An Eccentric Genius!

Elon Musk – One of the world’s biggest disruptors! Tesla, SpaceX, Starlink, Neuralink, The Boring Company, xAI, X (Twitter), PayPal and OpenAI – The list of disruptive enterprises does not get bigger or impressive than this!

How did a boy, who was bullied and had a difficult childhood, turn into one of the richest and most influential man on earth? What did it take to build his business empire? And who is he as a person?

Sir Walter Isaacson tries in answering the above questions. Walter is one of the best biographers, who has documented the lives of Einstein, Benjamin Franklin, Leonardo da Vinci, Jennifer Doudna and Steve Jobs. Hence the expectations of his work on Elon Musk have been naturally very high! The 600 plus page biography gives a detailed description of his life – the early childhood years, personal relationships, professional journey, beliefs, and controversies.

The book keeps switching between his personal and professional life. A significant spotlight is spent on how Musk spearheaded Tesla and SpaceX – the two game changing enterprises, which are his biggest achievements.

Automobile industry is a complex industry with strong entrenched players and vested interests. His single-minded pursuit of building cool and mass scale electric vehicles redefined the industry. Navigating tough competition and operational challenges, he built Tesla as one of the most valuable companies in the world. During crisis of production at Tesla, he slept at the factory for weeks! Tesla’s success is indeed stuff of legends.

And no less commendable feat is SpaceX – rocket science is not everyone’s cup of tea, and he challenged the leading American aerospace giants. Focussing on reusable rockets and thinking out of box helped him succeed! He broke the “cost plus” model at NASA. Picture this: “When in 2014,” Isaacson writes, “Nasa awarded SpaceX the contract to build a rocket that would take astronauts to the space station, it had on the same day given a competing contract, with 40% more funding, to Boeing. By the time SpaceX succeeded in 2020, Boeing had not even been able to get an unmanned test flight to dock with the station.”

Musk wants to colonise Mars and is totally paranoid about it – he wants to make humans a multi-planetary species in his lifetime! He has built other equally significant business – the OpenAI, StarLink, NeuraLink, The Boring Company and XAI. He was one of the early investors at Paypal.

Elon Musk has a clear toolkit for business success. He challenges the existing practices in each of the industries he operates in. He believes in engineering and design teams should work together – so they work next to each other. He is totally involved in the engineering and manufacturing activities and likes to be in control. He tries to build everything himself – vertical integration. He drives down the costs with a terrorist fervour. The idiot index is his favourite idea – which calculated how much more costly a finished product was than the cost of its basic materials. If a product had a high idiot index, its cost could be reduced significantly by devising more efficient manufacturing techniques.

He takes big bets, huge risks and makes quick decisions. He is often quoted – the only laws are the laws of physics – everything else is a recommendation. All these traits have helped him become the richest man on the earth and Time’s ‘Person Of The Year’.

But Elon Musk is also a ruthless leader who does not care about people. He does not believe in work-life balance. He thrives in a constant crisis mode. He has no empathy. Walter suggests that his painful childhood could be partly a reason for it. As a kid in South Africa, Elon Musk was regularly beaten by bullies and was even in hospital. His father offered bigger emotional pains with his destructive behaviour.

“I’m just a fool for love,” Musk tells Isaacson. “I am often a fool, but especially for love.” Elon Musk’s relationships have an interesting arc as well. His relationships include actors Talulah Riley and Amber Heard, musician Grimes and Justin. He also his father to the twins of his top executive and venture capitalist Shivon Zilis – conceived by in-vitro fertilization.

He also believes that the declining fertility late is a cause of great concern. People should reproduce more – he has 10 children from multiple partners.  When Shivon was pregnant with twins, and was experiencing complications, in a nearby room, a woman serving as a surrogate for Musk and Grimes, was suffering from pregnancy complications too. All three women were nearby as they helped Musk’s vision of reproducing more.

One of his most controversial and interesting acquisition is Twitter, which he has rebranded as X.  As I read his tweets regularly, this is where he could slip. This could be his Waterloo. Walterson says that owning the global playground is his revenge at being bulled at the school playground. But Twitter is not a tech company, it is a people business – one area which is not Musk’s strong suit.

Musk indeed comes across an imperfect individual with high degrees of toxicity, disregard, and ego. Walter tires to justify it. “Sometimes great innovators are risk-seeking man-children who resist potty training,” Isaacson concludes in the last lines of his life of Musk. “They can be reckless, cringeworthy, sometimes even toxic. They can also be crazy. Crazy enough to think they can change the world.”

Like what Elon Musk said on a live TV Show: “To anyone I’ve offended, I just want to say I reinvented electric cars and I’m sending people to Mars in a rocket ship. Did you think I was also going to be a chill, normal dude?”

    Are we OK with this?

Another Steve Jobs? Steve Jobs and Elon Musk are very similar in their maddening and relentless pursuit for excellence and success. Both changed the face of industries they operated in. Both had serious issues in people management and showed lack of empathy. One difference was – Steve was more design driven and big thinker. Elon Musk is more engineering driven and loves to get into micromanagement. And yes, Steve never tweeted recklessly!

Unfortunately, while the book is a great source of information of Elon Musk’s life and offers multiple examples of how we broke citadels of traditional industries and created success with Tesla and SpaceX, it offers less insights. The book is paean to Musk the Emperor – our real-life Tony Stark in Iron Man, where he had a cameo!

Sir Walter Issacon’s Elon Musk Biography is a mixed dossier of Musk’s personal and professional lives – rich in information, poor in insights! Not his best work!

Elon Musk – Love him. Hate him. Cannot ignore him. Drives passionate opinions. Worshipped. Crucified.

Elon Musk – An eccentric genius! A flawed innovator! Saving humanity while not being human? The jury is still out on Elon Musk!

    • Suave COO Features In Europol’s Most Wanted Fugitives
    • Yet Another Financial Fraud

All of the above and much more!

Skandal! Bringing Down Wirecard, is a Netflix Documentary that unfolds one of the biggest corporate corruption and financial fraud case of the recent times! Wirecard went bust after its dubious malpractices were discovered and a staggering $1.9 billion was found missing from its books. Skandal! is based on Financial Times’ Dan McCrum’s book ‘Money Men: A Hot Startup, A Billion Dollar Fraud, A Fight for the Truth’. Dan was the person who unravelled the Wirecard fraud.

Skandal! explains the entire Wirecard drama and its intricacies in a lucid and engaging manner – through a mixture of graphical story telling, rich interviews and brilliant insights. The journalists where followed and spied by Wirecard’s investigators. They were suspended due to smart counter-allegations by Wirecard and a short trader was threatened by thugs. Lots of interesting histrionics!

How did Wirecard execute the scam? Who were responsible? While Skandal! answers such questions about the Wirecard saga, its raises important queries as well:

    • How did the Wirecard fraud go unnoticed for so long?
    • What loopholes were exploited? Are they fixed?
    • Did German politicians and media turn a Nelson’s Eye to Wirecard?

Lots of truth is still not unknown. The former Wirecard COO Jan Marsalek disappeared shortly and is currently wanted by the German police. He is listed on Europol’s list of Europe’s most wanted fugitives. CEO Braun resigned and was arrested on suspicion of false accounting and market manipulation.

    Watch it!

    A few thoughts do emerge….

As always, it was the Wirecard employees, customers and common investors who had to pay the price!

Wirecard had some of the best and extremely talented technologists and business experts, who brought great ideas to life. Many innovative ideas came to an abrupt end and many employees suffered for no fault of theirs.

Wirecard was a darling of investors. The whole financial world watched how Wirecard surpassed CommerzBank and Deutsche Bank, the traditional Financial heavyweights. There was a move to buy Deutsche Bank as well. All investments turned sour!

And biggest casualty was the image of Germany and Germans – extremely hard working, honest, focussed, passionate and determined champions!
