Genius A R Rahman wins Oscar Award for the Best Original Soundtrack for Slumdog Millionaire and for Best Original Soundtrack – Jai Ho for the same movie.
Slumdog Millionaire has swept Oscars with awards in almost all categories it was nominated including Best Picture, Best Director for Danny Boyle, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Sound Mixing etc.
It was great to see Rahman’s speech of choosing love over hate. Simple message. Universal message. The feeling of seeing Jai Ho and O Saaya being played live at Oscars was really special.
Time to Celebrate Rahman and Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire. This British Movie has done India proud !

Aditya is a lucky boy. He got a good opportunity to act as Lord Krishna at a holy congregation.
A week long Bhagvad Saptaah is being held at Mani Nagar’s Radha Krishna Temple. During the Saptaah, various event of Lord Krishna’s life are celebrated. On Sunday, the birth of Lord Krishna was to be celebrated and Aditya was given the opportunity to play the baby Krishna. Aditya was required to act as the new born Lord Krishna. He had to sleep in the basket and Vasudev would carry him.
We reached the place at 7 pm and Aditya was made to dress like baby Krishna. Unfortunately, the event was running late and after some time Aditya was uncomfortable in those costumes and heat. We tried to keep him in good spirits. I was tense and nervous – my son’s first public performance ! I recalled my first stage appearance in school.
However, Aditya was very comfortable when his turn came. In fact, after some time, he actually slept as Vasudev carried him. He woke up as people started to worship him and touch at his feet. After all, he was Lord Krishna and all people worshipped him !
We bow down to the Lord Krishna with all humility. We are grateful to Him that Aditya could act as Bal Gopal. At the same time, we are grateful to the organizers for this opportunity to Aditya.

Good observation. It follows the often quoted idea – Do what you love to do, and you will never have to work again in life. From interviewer’s perspective, it gives an idea of person’s natural personality.

Recently, Gujaratilexicon and Gujarati Literary Academy had organized the launch of the book ‘Gujarati Diaspora in Britain’. The book is authored by Shri Makrand Mehta and Sushri Shirin Mehta.
The long pending view was that Gujaratis were only coolies but this book also showcases the industrial and trading work of Gujaratis. It is a path-breaking work which traces the growth of Gujarati diaspora in Great Britain.
The book has one wonderful extract about Bhagavadsinhji Maharaj of Gondal. I have reproduced one extract here:
ગોંડલના રાજા ભગવતસિંહ :
સૌરાષ્ટ્રના પ્રગતિશીલ રાજવીઓમાં ગોંડલના રાજા ભગવતસિંહ ( ૧૮૬૫-૧૯૪૪) મોખરાનું સ્થાન ધરાવે છે. વડોદરાના મહારાજા સયાજીરાવ ગાયકવાડની જેમ તેમણે ઇંગ્લૅન્ડના અનુભવોને અમલમાં મૂકીને ગોંડલ રાજ્યમાં શાળા અને કોલેજો, સ્ત્રી અધ્યાપન પાઠશાળા, બાગબગીચા અને જાહેર ઇમારતો તથા હૉસ્પિટલોની સ્થાપના કરી હતી. તેમણે અનેક વર્ષોની મહેનતના પરિણામસ્વરૂપતૈયાર કરાવેલા ગુજરાતી શબ્દકોષ “ભગવતગોમંડળ”ની મૂળ પ્રત આજે પણ ઑક્સફર્ડ યુનિવર્સિટીમાં સચવાઈ છે.
રાજકોટની રાજકુમાર કૉલેજમાં અભ્યાસ કર્યા બાદ ભગવતસિંહ ૧૮૮૩માં ઇંગ્લૅન્ડ ગયા.તેમને શિક્ષણ સંસ્થાઓમાં ખાસ રસ હોવાથી પ્રાઈમરી સ્કૂલોથી માંડીને લંડન, ઑક્સફર્ડ, કેમ્બ્રીજ અને એડીનબરો યુનિવર્સિટીની મુલાકાત લીધી હતી. તેઓ ત્યાંના પ્રોફેસરો અને વિદ્યાર્થીઓને મળતા. વગદાર અંગ્રેજો સાથે સતત સંપર્કમાં રહેતા. હિંદના રાજામહારાજાઓ અને દીવાનોને મળવામાં તેમને ઓર મઝા પડતી. ભગવતસિંહે પોતાના પ્રવાસના અનુભવો વર્ણવતો ગ્રંથ “journal of a visit to England in 1883” તેમના સમયના હિંદ અને બ્રિટન વચ્ચેના સંબંધોને સમજવામાં અત્યંત મહત્ત્વનો છે. ઑક્સફર્ડ યુનિવર્સિટીમાં તે સમયે પ્રખ્યાત ક્રાંતિકારી શામજી કૃષણ વર્મા પ્રોફેસર હતા. ભગવતસિંહે તેમની સાથે બ્રિટનના સંસ્કૃત વિદ્વાનો ઉપરાંત રાજકારણની ચર્ચાઓ કરી. બંન્નેએ લંચ લીધા બાદ કેટલાક અંગ્રેજ પ્રોફેસરોની મુલાકાત લીધી. તેમણે લખ્યું છ
“My visit to Oxford, the most ancient and renowned seat of learning was one of the pleasantest.”
ત્યારબાદ ભગવતસિંહ મેડિકલ કૉલેજ જોવા એડીનબરો ગયા. ત્યાં તેમણે જોયું કે અંગ્રેજ અને કેટલાક હિંદી વિદ્યાર્થીઓ વિવિધ દાક્તરી ઓજારોના ઉપયોગ વડે એનેટોમી તથા સર્જરી શીખી રહ્યાં હતા. તેમને પણ મેડિસિન શીખવાની ઇચ્છા થઈ. ‘મહારાજા સાહેબ’ની કોઈ પણ જાતની પૂર્વ તૈયારી વગર મેડિકલ ફેકલ્ટીમાં એડમિશન મળી ગયું અને ટૂંક સમયમાં સ્કોટલૅન્ડની આ મહાન યુનિવર્સિટીએ તેમને‘બેચલર ઇન મેડિસિન’ની માનદ ડિગ્રી પણ આપી દીધી. ૧૮૮૭માં તેમને લંડન યુનિવર્સિટીએ પણ એલ.એલ.ડી., એટલે કે “ડૉક્ટર ઑફ લેટર્સ”ની માનદ પદવી એનાયત કરી હતી.
ભગવતસિંહે લંડનની સંસ્થા “નેશનલ ઇન્ડિયન એસોસિયેસન”ની પ્રવૃત્તિઓમાં ઘણો રસ લીધો હતો. તેનો આશય હિંદમાંથી આવતા વિદ્યાર્થીઓ અને અન્ય મુલાકાતીઓની ભાષાકીય તેમજ અન્ય શૈક્ષણિક સવલતો પૂરી પાડવાનો હતો. પ્રખ્યાત સમાજ-સુધારક મીસ મેરી કાર્પેન્ટરે તેની સ્થાપના ૧૮૭૦માં કરી હતી. અગાઉમીસ મેરી કાર્પેન્ટરે ગુજરાતની મુલાકાત લીધી હતી અને મહીપતરામ રૂપરામ , ભોળાનાથ સારાભાઈ, હરકોર શેઠાણી, નગરશેઠ પ્રેમાભાઈ હીમાભાઈ અને રણછોડલાલ છોટાલાલ જેવા સમાજ-સુધારકો, વેપારીઓ અને ઉદ્યોગપતિઓને મળ્યાં હતાં. તેમણે“Six Months in India” નામના ગ્રંથમાં ઘણી રસપ્રદ માહિતી આપી છે. પાછળથી જયારે ડૉ. જીવરાજ મહેતા, ડૉ. સુમન્ત મહેતા અને અનસૂયાબહેન સારાભાઈ જેવા ગુજરાતી વિદ્યાર્થીઓ ઇંગ્લૅન્ડ ભણવા ગયા ત્યારે આ સંસ્થા તેમને સૌને મદદરૂપ થઈ હતી. આમ મીસ મેરી કાર્પેન્ટર અને ૧૯૦૫માં તેમના અવસાન બાદ મીસ મેનિંગે “નેશનલ ઇન્ડિયન એસોસિયેશન”નું સુકાન સંભાળીને હિંદ અને ભારત વચ્ચેનો ભાવાત્મક, એકેડેમિક અને સાંસ્કૃતિક સેતુ રચી આપ્યો હતો. ભગવતસિંહે તેની ઘણી પ્રશંસા કરી છે. ૧૮૯૦ના તેના અહેવાલ મુજબ હાલ “યુ.કે.માં કુલ ૨૦૭ ઇન્ડિયન વિદ્યાર્થીઓ અભ્યાસ કરી રહ્યાં છે અને તેમાં ૬૪ વિદ્યાર્થીઓ ગુજરાતના છે.”
ભગવતસિંહના સમયમાં એડીનબરો યુનિવર્સિટીના હિન્દી વિદ્યાર્થીઓએ ૧૮૮૨માં ‘એડીનબરો ઇન્ડિયન એસોસિયેશન’ સ્થાપ્યું હતું. તેમાં પારસી અને બંગાળીવિદ્યાર્થીઓ મુખ્ય હતા. ત્યારબાદ ભગવતસિંહ એડીનબરોની અંધશાળા જોવા ગયા. તેઓ અંધજનોને બ્રેઈલ લિપિ શીખવા ઉપરાંત હુન્નરઉદ્યોગ કરતા જોઈને છક્ક થઈ ગયા. તેમણે લખ્યું છે કે સાચા માનવકલ્યાણ ખાતર હિંદમાં આવી કોઈ ‘પ્રેક્ટિકલ સંસ્થા’ શરૂ થાય તો તે મંદિરો કરતાં પણ ઈશ્વરની વધારે સમીપ રહેશે.
ઐતિહાસિક દૃષ્ટિએ ગુજરાત અને બ્રિટનનું અનુસંધાન કરવામાં મહીપતરામ, કરસનદાસ મૂળજી, બી.એમ.મલબારી અને મીસ મેરી કાર્પેન્ટરના પ્રવાસગ્રંથોની જેમ ભગવતસિંહનો ઉપરોક્ત ગ્રંથ ઘણો મદદરૂપ છે.

Gujaratilexicon Team is assisting Shri Vipoolbhai Kalyani for an very novel and innovative project. The project aims to digitize, edit and preserve ancient Gujarati bhajans of artisans. They are very important from historical context for research purposes. Of course, connoisseurs of music will relish on this bhajans.
The project is being executed under the leadership of Shri Niranjan Rajyaguru of Anand Ashram, Ghoghavadar, Gondal. The project is expected to be completed by end of 2009 when all the ancient bhajans will be released in MP3 Format.

Government of India, IISC, Bangalore and IIT Madras are working on a developing a computer costing USD 10 or Rs 500 for people. Imagine the benefits to masses and students ! It will explode the market for software and create new opportunities like servicing etc.
The computer will be a small equipment with expandable memory, LAN and Wi-Fi facilities. The government will also produce e-content on every subject which will be made available free of cost.
The scheme would cost Rs 4,612 crore in the 11th Plan. About 40 per cent of the fund will be spent on developing e-content. The e-content will be provided free to the institutions and students.
The power of internet and social networking is being realized by all organizations. Everyone knows the role played by internet for Brand Obama.
